$70 for a PLATE?
When we were in Italy last month, my Mom fell in love with a handpainted plate at a restaurant. It had the restaurants name on it, but it was pretty. The woman who makes the plates had a shop right around the corner, but she was closed because it was a Sunday.
Sooo... their 25th anniversary is October.
I've managed to contact this woman via email (with the limited italian I have, and the limited english she has), and she can make a pizza plate for my Mother (it's completely flat, and about 12 inches across, so it's kinda like a platter), painted with grapes to match Mom's vineyard kitchen, and it'll have my parents' names, wedding and anniversary dates on the underside.
I was SO excited, then she told me the price: 55 euros: about $70 US $. PLUS shipping.
I'm torn - we were going to send them on a weekend getaway for their anniversary. I just feel like this plate will bring back some great memories for a long long time. I could get the plate TOO, but I know Mom will be mighty pi$$ed if she find out that I spent close to $100 (including shipping from Siena to NY) on a PLATE.
What would you do?
TIA

Re: $70 for a PLATE?
I know it's a lot of $$, but it seems like the plate is SUCH a special gift. It's a memory of your trip, and it'll be a memory of their 25th anniversary for years to come. Even though it's a lot of $$ I just think it would be such a great surprise for your parents. I can just imagine how excited they'd be! A lot of people get these silver engraved paltes for their silver anniversary, but this is so much more personal and unique. I just think it's perfect!

Re: $70 for a PLATE?
That's what I was leaning towards. Thanks guys, for helping me out.
I actually just emailed the painter back, and gave her the names/wedding date/anniversary date.
I'm excited - can't wait to see it.

Re: $70 for a PLATE?
i don't think $70 is alot at all. especially since it's for a 25th wedding anniversary gift! and b/c you know how much she loved the plate, i'm sure she'll be overjoyed that you put so much thought into this gift!! how can you put a price on that???

we're sending them to Key West for 3 days too that's the "real" gift - but you're right - I think she'll love the plate.

Good choice to buy it. Do you have siblings that would chip in with you?
