HELP! has anyone experienced this after giving DC an albuterol treatment??

I gave DS and DD an albuterol treatment on Wednesday night and I woke up covered in hives on Thursday morning. I didn;t know what it was from. Then this morning, i woke up again COVERED from head to toe in hives. I did not give an Albuterol treatment yesterday at all. now i'm starting to feel itchy again. DH thinks thats what it is because they sit on my lap while giving it so i obviously inhaled it. has anyone or your DC had an allergic reaction like this to abuterol??? how long did it last? TIA!

I never had that. I would call the ped and/or your gp to discuss.

Might not be the albuterol..Could be the tubing or the mask... Maybe a latex allergy? Did it happen right away? I would take some Benadryl and definitely call your doctor..

Thanks ladies! It's def not a latex allergy. I was tested specifically for a latex allergy when I was pg and it vame back negative. It didn't happen right after. I gave the tratments 10pm to DD and 10:30pm to DS. Went to bed, woke up and covered in hives. Took a shower and it went down. Still had little bumos that itched that kept coming and going, but. Nothing like the hives. Went to bed that night with no nebulizer treatments and woke up again in hives. It went away and on and off all day slightly itchy and small bumps that go away and come back. I'm going to give it til tomorrow and if I wake up in hives again, I'm going to the dr. Thanks ladies!

It is strange what we can be allergic to... I was an EMT for years. Was fine with latex for most of the time. Then one year I became allergic to it. Every time I put a pair of gloves on, my hands would turn all red and blow up! I hope they can figure out what is causing your allergy. Chat Icon

anything is possible, but it is highly unlikely that is is from the albuterol. i have worked in healthcare and specifically with asthmatics for 10years and have never seen someone have a reaction to albuterol like that. especially if it happened again the next night when you didn't give them their treatment. but again, i would call the ped b/c anything is possible.

Did you maybe wash your sheets or clothes in something different or shower with a different soap? If you didnt do a treatment last night and went to sleep and woke up with them, I would think that its something in your bed maybe. GL- hope you figure it out!

Re: HELP! has anyone experienced this after giving DC an albuterol treatment??

Thanks Ladies for all your replies! I woke up yesterday was fine for like 30 minutes and then started to get a few hives. I took benadryl and it went away almost immediately. I woke up today about 2 1/2 hours ago and so far so good. No hives. I did talk to the pharmacist at CVS and he said although an allergic reaction like that to the Albuterol is rare, it is possible and the hives could take a few days to go away. I haven't changed my detergent so i don't think it was that. The only thing i can think of was the albuterol. It's the only thing i did differently. I am hoping that's what it was an i am done with these darn hives. DH is going to give the treatments now going forward.
