What are your favorite summer spots to go with the kids that are not the "popular" ones on LI ? Places that get overlooked...
Besides, popular beaches, parks, sprinkler parks, , blah blah blah......
Thought we could get a list going because theres always those hidden little places that not many know about but are fun and are not overly advertised
I'll start, though its not really hidden, my kids love it and its free...
Centereach Library opened an outdoor area lcalled The Nature Explorium last year with a working water trough kids play with , water the flowers etc.., construction/gardening area with wheelbarrows and shovels , shell table, slate slabs with paint brushes to color with water, block and music area....A "back to the basics" type place that both my kids really like
You do not need to be a member

Vanderbilt Planetarium...My DS loves it there as well
One more is the Cornel Cooperative Extension Farm in Yaphank:

And Sweetbriar Nature center in Smithtown:

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery. A little $$$ for a single visit IMO, but for $50 a year we have the family membership which is a terrific value. A nice low-key place to go feed the fish, look at the indoor exhibits, walk around the pond on the grounds of the church right next to it, and bring a picnic lunch.
Sagamore Hill. It's free to park and walk around, the only admission is for a guided tour of Roosevelt's house, which we have never done. Another quiet place to walk around, have a picnic lunch, and do the nature trail that goes down to the water.

Sagamore Hill. It's a drive for us, but totally worth it, my DS is obsessed with the place.
South Shore Nature Center. Totally free, it has a little museum with tons of animals that the one little staff lady will take out and let the kids play with (turtles, snakes, frogs, etc.) And there are miles of boardwalk trails that you can walk, and you will definitely see deer. It's in East Islip.

can we keep this thread going?
I know the Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a nice place to visit, but I'm not sure if really young kids would enjoy it...
Heckshire park in huntington is nice- big pond with lots of fish, geese, swans and turtles to look at, and a playground area (that i think gets kinda hot) but its a nice place to visit- free, too!

Takapausha Preserve in Seaford.
When it is super-duper hot -
The Famingdale Library.
Seaford Library - has awesome storytimes, craft days and other kid events!!
Cold Spring Harbor Library.
Ikea - DD loves the mac & cheese, and to play in the play area for an hour. She also loves to play in the bedrooms and toys upstairs.

Great post idea! I always forget that the South Shore Nature Preserve is in my backyard! DS should be ready to enjoy that now! Just may run over after his nap today!
And I so want to check out that Centereach library! So cool!!!
Thanks!

We love Avalon Park in Stony Brook. DS loves to walk the trails and explore. It is shady and cool on sunny days, too.

It's not on LI, but I've heard good things about Governor's Island. the ferry is free from Manhattan and Brooklyn. I have heard they have a cute Children's museum and fun stuff for kids. I am hoping to go in the next few weeks.

One of our favorites! The best part is that it is FREE!
