Fire Island newbie here!!

DH and I have an oppurtunity to have an entire day and evening to ourselves coming up, and we were thinking of taking the Bay Shore ferry over to Fire Island and spending the day on the beach, and then having dinner, and taking the ferry back later. I have a few questions though....

We were thinking either Ocean Beach or Ocean Bay Park. A former co-worker has a house in OBP, and I have been there a few times, but not enough to really know where to go or what to do. We don't want to hang around with a bunch of drunken 21 year olds all day and night, and I have heard that Ocean Beach is pretty wild. Is there anyplace you would recommend eating in either place that's fun but not too crazy? Or even a happy hour that's not insane?

Also, and I know this is a dumb question, but we can just get off the ferry and go to the beach, right? We don't have to be residents or anything?

TIA!!!

I am 30 and over Ocean Beach personally, DH and I have been going to Saltaire the last few years and this year we are renting a house in Kismet the week of July 4th. Kismet is more relaxed and less drunk young kids. Surf's Out in Kismet is a great restaurant.

As for beaches, you will have no problem walking on to the beach but there really isn't anywhere to go to the bathroom or clean up--F.I. is not really day visitor friendly for that reason. If you are okay with that, go for it!

I agree with the PP.

I have only done day trips to FI & if I did not have someones house to go back to just to use the bathroom & clean up....I doubt I would have had a good time.

Day visiting to FI is not ideal in my opinion for this reason.
