Major Blizzard could cripple the area! Please stay safe! (Read updates below the pics!)

From Friday: (SATURDAY UPDATE BELOW THE PICS.) I will never go back and edit my original thoughts.

I don't really have much of a better picture than I did yesterday. But the storm appears to be closer to Long Island than last weekend's storm that stayed out to sea. And I figured I'd put your weather alerts out there today, instead of tomorrow. (But Christmas day there should be more of a consensus on path of this storm.)

Anyway, right now the storm appears to only be bringing a few inches of snow to Eastern Long Island. Most of this falling Sunday evening and into Monday. But over the next 24 hours, as this storm forms, a clearer picture will form.

Even if this storm does come further to the west, it looks like the places most in trouble would be Suffolk county. And sucks to be teachers as you can't wish for a snow day. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Keep an eye on this link on Saturday. This gives estimated snowfall totals for the next 48 hours. So obviously now, the storm is more than 48 hours away. I just figured most of you won't be on tomorrow, so wanted to give you a heads up. But again, right now this storm appears to be staying off the coast. (Just closer than last weekend's storm, so we can see snowfall.)

Have a Merry Christmas! And remember those that are working through it to keep you all happy. And remember those of us working the same shift as our husbands, needing to bring our children into work because there are no babysitters on Christmas. Grrrrrr.

Again, this link won't be updated til at least Friday night, if not Saturday morning. So don't go by the 'totals' right now.

MAJOR UPDATE CHRISTMAS DAY!!!!!!!

As I was nervous about yesterday, but did not want to scare you about was the storm taking a turn to the west. It appears that is happening. I had a feeling, that's why I wanted to give you a heads up yesterday.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN KELLY?

Snow. Lots of it. Yesterday we may have been looking at 2-4. Now it would not be a shock to see a foot or more in areas. (Although forecast as of noon on Saturday is calling for 6-9 inches areawide.)

WHEN IS IT COMING KELLY?

The bulk of the snowfall will be Sunday evening through Monday late morning. But truly expect to see snow falling on SUnday afternoon across Long Island. Even sooner than that in NJ.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW KELLY?

It could get windy too. In fact, I would bet on it.

WHAT COULD POTENTIALLY KEEP US FROM GETTING ALL THIS SNOW KELLY?

A sharp turn of the storm to the East. Not looking likely. Or, if you live along the coast or East End you could see some warming of temperatures. WARMING OF TEMPS? Yes, meaning your snow could turn to ice for a small period of time. This would result in smaller snowfall totals in those areas.

KELLY, DO I NEED TO RUN TO ANY OPEN STORE RIGHT NOW SCREAMING 'SNOW, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SNOW!!!!!!!!!! GIVE ME ALL YOUR TOILET PAPER, MILK AND BREAD!!!!!!!'

No. But if you are about to run out of milk, I'd suggest you go Sunday morning instead of waiting til Sunday night. Hello common sense.

Keep an eye on your storm totals, even after the snow has begun to fall. They can easily change with these type of storms. A shift of 30 miles in the storm track can mean the difference of 3 inches of snow or two feet of snow.

I am sorry I don't have much time today to explain the reasoning behind all of this. But if you have questions about the meteorological side of things, let me know. I will try to answer when I can. Or I can do a full explanation of these storms at another time.

AS ALWAYS, I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT FLIGHTS. I ASSUME FLIGHTS WILL BE DELAYED OR CANCELED UP AND DOWN THE EASTERN SEABOARD SUNDAY AND MONDAY. But I truly can't answer your specific questions about your flgith at such and such time to such and such place.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!! Chat Icon

--------------------------------------------------------
So I wrote this only a few hours ago, saying the totals will probably increase to over a foot.

There you go. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And I just realized that I am down to 3 rolls of toilet paper. So I will be one of the loons looking for TP in the morning. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

UPDATE SUNDAY MORNING:

This storm is taking on a serious side. From Craig Allen:

"There's still time to buy what you need in the morning and secure items outdoors but it is imperative you understand the danger this kind of storm can impose- worst case scenario- wind damage and power outages with temperatures below freezing and blinding snow with drifts that could paralyze the area for awhile."

Again, there is a very serious side to this storm. On Thursday we still weren't sure if this storm was hitting. By the time Friday hit there were too many people not online or watching TV. Please stay inside Sunday afternoon and overnight Sunday into MOnday if you can. I truly can't tell you NOT to work on Monday, but I would definately look into alternatives.

I am no longer cracking jokes. This is serious. Too many people are unaware of the magnitude of this storm. Spread the word for those traveling!

I know you are saying to yourself 'Why do I care about this storm? We have witnessed this type of snowfall before.' True, we have seen this amount of snowfall. But with the winds it will make visibility nearly impossible. And with such high winds it can cause power outages.

--------------------------------------------------------

I will reiterate: Lots of snow. (Probably around one foot) We can deal with that. But since this storm is gaining strength, the winds are going to be the b!tch. Trust me on the meteorological side: Winds will increase wildly on Sunday. Here is an a quote from the National Weather Service (NWS):

"MEDIA...PLEASE RELAY THE WIND IMPACTS WITH THIS STORM - RESIDENTS
SHOULD SECURE THE HOLIDAY DECORATIONS AND OTHER LOOSE
OBJECTS....ETC. THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER SNOW STORM."

So the NWS, who are the Gods of weather forecasting, are begging the media to let the public know.

You may not lose power. But why not prepare? Do you have fresh batteries in flashlights? Does your child require a nebulizer or other machine/medication? Did you leave your inflatable snowman out on your lawn?

PREPARE YOURSELF SO YOU AREN'T CURSING TOMORROW. Hopefully most of you wont have to use this warning.

------------------------------------------------------

Alright. The weather dork in me just has to add this. There is a potential for 'banding' on Sunday.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN KELLY? Will Paul McCartney get together with Ringo Starr?!?!?

No. Banding on the radar will appear as spiral bands of more intense 'color'. Bands are typically no wider than 10 miles (approximately). So, while looking at the radar during the height of the storm (Sunday afternoon into night), you should notice these 'spiral bands'. They will look like a pinwheel in the middle of lots of color.

Best part of these bands: (other than the fact that these are the heavy bands of snowfall) is that they have the potential to have thundersnow!!!!!!!! One of my favorite things. You damn well better get out your FLIP to get the video of thundersnow. It rocks!

Here is a link to the radar:

Click here. Blue colors are typically a light snowfall. Green gets a bit more intense. Yellow and orange could potentially be 'bands'.
