When my nephew was 4, I got him a train set he absolutely loved.
When he was six, DH and I got him a nerf gun.
He's 8 and still remembers the train set (large lego type) and nerf guns.
ETA: My sister was not a fan of the train set because of all the pieces (LOL) but it did keep him occupied.
