A Good Friend Of Mine Needs Help/Honest Advice...

i just got this email from a VERY close friend (she emailed like 20 of her mommy friends) and I wanted to offer her advice & support...does anyone have success/failure stories?? I did share my story with her....but i figured i'd post here and then send her the link....
_________________________________________

i just got back from the doctors, i went last week for my first appointment and i thought i was 6wk1d but he thought i was more like 5wk3-4d. he wanted to see me in 2 weeks but knew that i was paranoid so he said i could come back a week later.. well i just got back and he is concerned because i'm measuring about 6wk when i should be measuring 7wk. he couldn't really see a fetus, he saw something that could've been it, he turned on the heartbeat part and we heard the start of a heartbeat. he wants to watch this carefully but he said, he can't say i'm fine, but he can't say i'm not fine either. there is a chance i'm miscarrying but he's not so certain on it. i know the dates could be wrong and i ovulated later but for the baby to be this early, i would've had to ovulated way after and i didn't have sex then. has this happened to any of you? what was the outcome? please be honest. i'm so devastated right now

This did not happen to me but I have heard that sometimes its not about when you ovulate but when the baby implants. SO maybe it was just a late implanter. I know far too well how scary "waiting" is. And I wish I had advice or words of wisdom, but in all honesty, its just a really scary time and all you can do is pray and wait Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: A Good Friend Of Mine Needs Help/Honest Advice...

The only thing I can relate to is that at my first appt I thought I was 7 weeks but was measuring a week behind and everything is fine I am 36 weeks now. As hard as it is she just has to wait and see what the dr says at the next appt.

Hope all is ok with your friend! Chat Icon

she can be off by a week and thats really what it sounds like.

she thinks she was 6 weeks initally but measured 5weeks 3 days. she went a week later and was measuring 6 weeks.
i would go next week and take it from there. easier said than done but there has been some growth from last week to this week. if they saw the start of a heartbeat then shes pretty much right on target.

ive been closely monitored by the re and know exactly when i Oed etc.
I went for a regular sono with the dr and was asked twice if i was sure i was 8 weeks and 2 days bc the baby was measuring a whole week behind. turns out the tech wasnt measuring it correctly but then got an accurate measurement of 8 weeks 3 days.

Re: A Good Friend Of Mine Needs Help/Honest Advice...

Based on my consult with my OB, I was measuring 6 weeks or so with Eddie. I had a sonongram to date the PGY that same appt, that put Eddie at roughly 5 weeks.

His original due date, based on O dates and the consultation was Sept 18....based on the sono, it was Sept 13. The Dr kept 9/18 the entire PGY.

I was SO paranoid bc I knew the exact date we conceived but guess what.....Eddie was born on Sept 13th....the date the sono put me at originally where he was measuring small for how far along I should have been, not the date based on my O date.

This happened to me with DS #1. Doc even told me I miscarried (instead of saying there was a CHANCE of m/c, he actually said m/c) because I had some spotting and when they did the sono, I looked/measured two weeks' younger than the calendar suggested. Based on my LMP, I was supposedly 8 wks along, but turns out I was only 5 weeks PG.

Went on to deliver a healthy baby boy, no complications at all. Tell your friend GL --- the waiting game is the worst....

Unfortunately, this happened to me twice - my 1st 2 pregnancies, the measurements were off. We even saw the heartbeat on both. Sadly, both miscarried. Sorry about your friend, but maybe it will work out.
I'm glad the doctor is being honest with her though and not giving her false hope. The idiot doctor who saw me at the time just told me i miscalculated and that all was fine (I charted so I knew my dates were correct).

She's measuring 5 days behind.

I believe my doctor told me with this pregnancy measuring 3-4 days behind is acceptable.
I am measuring 3 days behind and baby is growing fine.

However, I also had 2 pregnancies where the baby measured behind :

1) Baby should be 8 weeks, measuring 6.5 weeks with heartbeat. I miscarried 2 days later.

2) Baby should be 10 weeks, measuring 6 weeks with no heartbeat.

I think it really depends on how the baby grows from this point on. Could just be measuring a little behind & keep going.
Could be a sign that she will miscarry.

It really could go either way.
Prepare for the worst & hope for the best.
Hoping peanut is just running a little behind.

Re: A Good Friend Of Mine Needs Help/Honest Advice...

I just cut and pasted this..this was my response to someone last year when I was pregnant:

I got my bfp on 1/26/09, on 1/29/09 I went to the md, he said i was just about 5 weeks based on lmp(12/23)...I had a sono and there was nothing really to see-there was one tiny spot that he said could be the start of something(sac)(beta was in 900's) and told me to come back in 2 weeks. One week later I had some light brown spotting so they had me return and this time on sono there was a sac but nothing inside(beta this time was in 12,000's)-md wanted me to return in 2 weeks. That appt was cancelled on me. I finally went back on 2/23 where I should have been around 9 weeks. This time sono had a little baby and a heart flickering. Baby was measuring 8w3d. I have cycles averaging about 31 days so really for the first 2 appts I was only 4 and 5 weeks so it was way too early...

Honestly like most things in pregnancy there is no real answer....I went through something similar and miscarried, but also, there are many girls who go on to have healthy pregnancies. She's just got to try to stay positive for her little one. The not knowing is the worst part and it stinks anyone has to go through that. I wish her the best of luck!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
