Need advice on closing for a friend please help!
My friend is moving to NY from PA. She signed contracts and gave a $60K downpayment. The language in the contract says something along the lines that the closing date on the new house has to be "no later than Sept 1" if they provide proof of a mortgage committment by 8/23. She got the commitment letter before 8/23 but now the people don't want to close until 9/10. The real issue is that her son starts Kindergarten on 9/7 and she's too far to drive them to school. She's staying with her mom out in Suffolk for now since she already closed on her the sale of her PA home, but her new house is in upper westchester.
Anyway she's hysterically crying because her son can't start school on time etc and the sellers have given her no reason why they won't close by 9/1 after she met all their demands. They are 70 and already have a house in FLA.
Is there ANYTHING she can do to push the issue of the 9/1 date in the contract? Obviously she is going through her broker and lawyer but the sellers lawyer keeps saying we are closing on 9/10 and that's final. Can he do that? What's the point of a contract date then?

in NY closing on 9/1 means you have till 9/30 to close
maybe it's not the sellers but the lawyers who can't close before then
ETA-why not get a hotel for the 3 days and not stress over it so much?
it's annoying- but it's only 3 days - not 3 weeks

It's not me - its my friend. She has 3 young children 10 months, 3 and 5 and the nearest hotel is about 30 miles from the school (not in LI) I guess it's an option, just difficult. I'll definitely pass along the suggestion

that's difficult- but it's only 1 child starting kindergarden
I would maybe have him go the first day and then start after they close

why do lawyers use language like "on or before 9/1" or "no later than 9/1" if it means 9/30. Why don't they disclose that?
