Is it typical behavior or signs of ADHD?

Maddie's always been an energetic child but I'm starting to wonder if she could possibly have ADHD or something similar. I started to worry when last month her nursery school teacher brought to my attention that she has zero attention span, cannot sit still in class and has to be constantly reminded to stay focused on one task and tends to have emotional outburst from time to time with the other children. She also exhibits some of this behavior at home but didn't think this carried over to school as well since she had started of the school year as one of the most loving children. She is a very bright little girl so they have chalked some of it up to boredom and also she is the youngest child by several months so they also think it has to do with immaturity. The recommendation was to repeat the 3yr old class since she only makes the cutoff by 5 days this way she'll be the oldest and not the youngest. I'm going to give that a shot to see if it helps but wondering if I should look further into this at her age.

Re: Is it typical behavior or signs of ADHD?

I think it's hard to determine if a 3 year old has ADD or ADHD. My son (ADD not ADHD) was evaluated as a 4 year old & I was told he didn't have it.

At 4.5-5 years old, there was a difference that was apparent to both my husband & me.
He was fine one on one. He could watch a movie or TV show, do a puzzle, etc. When there were other distractions around him, he was all over the place. At a children's party, we had to constantly watch him because he exhibited impulsive behavior toward other children (which included striking them).

Other children could sit & listen to a task at hand. He could not. In karate, the instructor was very animated. Kids would watch him intently. My son was rolling around on the mat.

Ultimately the school brough it to our attention & it took a lot of heartwrenching conversations between DH & I before we came to the point of medication.

HTH. It was struggle in the beginning but once we found our path, it was very encouraging.

So was it at 4yrs old he didn't exhibit the symptoms or do you think he wasn't diagnosed because they thought he was too young? If she is ADHD I would love to find out before she starts kindergarten so we can work on different treatment plans to find out which is the best fit for her. I would like to make her transition to elementary school as painless as possible.

At 4, I think he was too young for them to diagnose officially.

There are dietary changes that you can try making that may help a little but ultimately my school of thought is medication & behavior modification works best.

You can start a behavior plan now too.

Re: Is it typical behavior or signs of ADHD?

Well, my son was just diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist with ADHD and he was 3 1/2 at the eval.

Our circumstance were a bit different..he was given a full autism screening after last years concerns and eval. He didn't meet criteria for autism, but he did meet it for ADHD. It is definitely diagnosable by the right person. Most of it though is based on parents answers...he was very calm and good for her surprisingly, lol.

We just know he can't sit still for long, he gets easily distracted, he moves his body a lot while he is trying to concentrate etc...the signs are all there.

We are not medicating until we see it interferes with school. He is still so little and he is improving every day. Right now we are looking into behavior therapy and just working with him one on one at home.

HTH!

Re: Is it typical behavior or signs of ADHD?

I would definately have her go to a ped. neurologist and get her checked out...

I would also have her evaluated by your CPSE in your school district. She might be eligible for a SEIT in the classroom for her focus/attention issues in the classroom. She will have a spec ed evaluation and a psych eval for her to get these services... You have nothing to loose...

Also, you can have her see a child psychologist for the behavioral issues..

Re: Is it typical behavior or signs of ADHD?

DS is 21 months. He was just evaluated by a psychologist this weekend. He has poor attention span, is very impulsive/aggressive to peers, can't sit still, can't wait, etc. The psych said when you look back on kids at 5 or 6 they all look like my son but not all kids at 1 and 2 have ADHD that look like him. I would definitely get her evaluated - they did an Auchenbach checklist both with us and with the school. Maybe she would qualify for services. At the present time, it doesn't look like DS is going to qualify but I am going to get him evaluated again at 2!

I know we talked about this at length last year at Sue's BBQ...DS is in the process of being evaluated and this has been brought up again. I was told by the child pschologist that they can abosultely diagnose at the age of 3 (which is DS's age). I was under the school of thought that while there can be tell tale signs at ages 3 or 4, that children generally aren't and shouldnt officially be diagnosed until they enter school.

I am so confused Chat Icon

ETA: I was also told by the child pschologist that at this age, the signs of ADHD and Autism can be very similar and children are often misdiagnosed between the two.

CPSE- Is the Comitee for Special Pre- school Education. This is who you need to go through to get any services through your school district. This will not cost any money for you. When they ask why you want an evaluation tell them exactly what is happening. They will have her evaluated and this will include a psych eval, a special education eval and or a Ot, pt and speech eval...

SEIT_ is a special education itinerary teacher.. This is a special education teacher who will help the child one on one in a classroom setting for various issues socialization, attention issues, behavioral issues as examples. It is basically a shadow in the classroom in addition to the regular teachers...

Hope this helps- I highly recommend this route..
