OMG!!! PLEASE someone hold me back from strangling my CPA. please help!advice needed
FOR THE Love of God, please give me insight. this is the last time i take my taxes to this CPA.
we gave our stuff in a little more than a month ago . i called today to inquire about the status and she tells us TODAY that she needs to file an extension.apparently we are not the only ones... last year she filed for extension and we did not get our taxes handed to us until Oct13th a few days before the extension deadline. her secretary mentioned that this time she will continue to work one everyones taxes and not have everyone wait till october.
anyhow, when you file for extension you have to pay what you owe ( if you do owe )and mail a form, correct? this is what we did last year. as of now she does not have any information on whether we owe or not but isnt this information needed by tomorrow!!!!!?!??
my 30th birthday is tomorrow and we have plans all day so we need to know today so that we can both be present to sign whatever form is needed and mail a check if needed..
***??? i keep in mind that she is doing my dh's business taxes. which is a whole year's worth of stuff..( we didnt file quarterly) but again, we handed in everything a little over a month ago.at this point she should be able to give us an provide us with extension materials, right?!?!?

honestly, it's hard to get a whole year's worth of material done during tax season, especially if the bank account has a lot of transactions and/or there are multiple accounts involved. however, we don't put anyone on extension unless we're missing info and the client isn't cooperating on getting us the info we need. i guess she has taken on more then she can handle. she should at least have an estimate for you of how much you need to send.
if her office is doing the write up then it would help giving her the statements quarterly.

i completely agree with you. we are well aware that by giving her a year's worth of bank/credit card statements to organize and put together during tax season is a major fete! we def give her the benefit of the doubt.
we did give her all the necessary documents she requested. there was nothing outstanding or anything she was waiting on for us to provide. we are in the process of finding a bookkeeper/accountant to do quarterly for us so that we do not run into this situation again.
i am ok with having to go into extension.NOT ok with having to wait till october to get our taxes back. NOT ok with not knowing if we owe anything b.c if we do, we need to mail the payment.
what happens if we owe and she does not make us aware tomorrow b/c she is in over her head? do we get penalized?

unfortunately thats what happens when there's too much work and not enough people to handle the load.
are you looking for someone to do the bookkeeping in house or your next accountant? all accountants i know of are able to do the write up throughout the year for you.
you might, depending on how much you owe and how much is already paid. here's a link that will help:

She can e-file your extensions for you so you don't have to change your plans. However, I would get a number tonight, so that you know what to expect. I wouldn't just let her blindly file your extensions.
