Need some birthday baking help
DD's first birthday party is next weekend  We are having a cupcake themed birthday party, so I plan on making lots of cupcakes! I really need some creative (but easy) ideas for decorating. I was thinking of doing brown, pink, and purple frosted cupcakes - since those are the colors of her party decorations. I'm assuming they make frosting dye (or do I use regular food coloring) - I am pretty clueless 
But now I'm trying to think of something "cute" to decorate the tops with - besides the usual sprinkles. Any suggestions?

I was thinking about a cupcake theme too. How about spelling out Happy Birthday _________(name) on the cupcakes?
maybe smiley faces with different color frostings?

Happy Birthday is a cute idea, but I'm going to put them on one of the cupcake "trees", so that won't work

Michaels has a new section with cupcake decorations...you might see something cute there. Or just some fun sprinkles.

also, one thing i never thought of and was just recently brought to my attention...
not all kiddos like icing   my DD devours it so i figured so do all kids...but no, it turns out many don't like it and actually just eat the cake! so with anything i bake now be it cookies or cupcakes, i always leave a few just plain...
for cupcake inspiration i browsed flickr galleries ...
ETA:
this was my first attempt at birthday baking for DD to bring to school last year... i colored the icing (would make a different one next go around) and bought the flowers at michaels...

Those are beautiful! Think I might do something similar - I just need to browse around Michael's and see what they have.

I would go to michaels... they have a lot of cute sprinkles and little decorations. they have these giant circle sprinkles that you could use to make polka dots.
We had a cupcake themed party and I made plain vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, but we had a "cupcake bar" with different toppings. I got colored sugars, dot sprinkles, star sprinkles, mini chocolate chips.
