Anyone know Labor Laws for Companies Partially Closing?

My friends company partially closed for the snow. People who work a couple feet from other people were paid to not come in while these people still had to come in or use one of there own days.
Is this legal to do?

I cant comment on the legalities as I am not an attorney- but is it possible that the job descriptions are different and one is an essential no matter what the weather?

Unfortunately, no the warehouses/production depts. were closed and the offices (non-essential as there are essential sections of the company) were open.

They'd be better off being consistent across the board, but could do it based on job descriptions, work from home situations, merit-based, executive level, etc.

Proving those who were paid for a day off didn't work could be challenging.

Bottom line is - outside of collective bargaining agreements - if you don't show up for work because of a snow day, the company does not have to pay you. You should have the option of using vacation time or personal time.

edited to add - not an attorney either.

Here's a good article that explains it:

Thanks. It was actually a "everyone is off except the office people" thing. Not sure why that would be fair and my friend said some people are in the same building and one got the day off paid and the others did not.
