 Re: Alarm Systems
After a few estimates in the $600-$700 range We just figured out to install yourself and contract through a smaller local company like Best Security or Millenium for the central monitoring will save us over 1/2 the installation fees and about $5.00-$10.00 month in service fees.

 Re: Alarm Systems
Slomins will give you a basic alarm system free of charge. Their monitoring rates are low.
The only catch is a 5yr contract when a lot of other companies only have 3yr.
If you get your oil from Slomins... that takes off $3 or so off the alarm monthly.

 Re: Alarm Systems
We have Slomins. They do a free system, but they will try to charge you if they can. Tell them you know that they do free systems and they will do it.

 Re: Alarm Systems
The free systems are usually a couple doors and a window. If you want all your windows and doors done, you will have to pay around $100 per window, maybe lower if you are getting alot done. We did all our windows, 3 doors, motion sensor, smoke/carbon monox. detector... I cant recall how much it was exactly but thats the kind of peace of mind I wanted. I get very paranoid esp when my DH works overnight and being pg with 2 small kids. Every little noise bothers me. I know alot of people who have just the doors and a motion sensor and are completely comfortable with it. We use ADT and pay around $30 per month.

 Re: Alarm Systems
I have ADT and I love it. Everything is wireless. I also have the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors hooked up. I also got the cell phone back-up (well actually, that is the main line used to transmit signals, and they use my home phone as the back-up since I have Optimum for phone service).
One of the reasons I went with them was because they have several monitoring stations across the country, and they said that if the power goes out at the station that monitors our area, any signals are automatically re-routed to one of the other stations. Apparently, Slomins only has 1 monitoring station (in Hicksville) so if the power goes out there, like it did in 2003 across the island, your house isn't being monitored because there isn't someplace else for the signals to be sent. I may be paranoid, but that really made up my mind for me. The extra couple of dollars a month for ADT was worth it for this alone.

 Re: Alarm Systems
Check out Alarm.com. Great system, easy to install, great customer service and much less expensive than the other companies. Includes Internet monitoring, text messaging, and lots of other cool features.

 Re: Alarm Systems
we have brinks. 20 windows (basement, first floor and 2 bedrooms on 2nd floor), 4 doors, 2 control panels, 1 sensor, 2 smoke/CO dectectors and 2 sirens. i think we paid around $400 for the installation and had to sign a 3 year contract. i forget what we pay a month but somewhere around $30.
i managed to set off the smoke dectectors 2x (steam from the shower) since the system was installed and they called RIGHT away.

 Re: Alarm Systems
We jsut had Slomins come in last week to install an alarm. It cost us $179 for installation.
There have been a few kinks that needed to be worked out and Slomins was REALLY great to work with. Very helpful.
Let me tell you though - the first salesman they sent to our house gave us an estimate of around $800. All we wanted was the basics. I called them back and had them send another salesman over. He was so much nicer - understood what we wanted and didn't try to rip us off....so just be careful and speak to a manager if you feel they are trying to take advantage of you.

 Re: Alarm Systems
That's what happened to us also. We had a system already from the previous owner, but we didn't want her company. Slomins originally quoted me $500 and when I told him forget it, he said he would do it for free. The hardware was already there, all he had to add is a few more sensors and a control box.
It was amazing how quickly he went from $500 to free.

 Re: Alarm Systems
We have Slomins. Alarming 2 doors and 2 interior motion detectors were included in the "free" installation. We pay around $85 every 3 months.
We have had them 6+ years and have never had a problem on any kind. I highly recommend them.

 Re: Alarm Systems
OK - Decision has been made - We signed with ADT... I am extremely happy - We got all the bells and whistles... Even talking key chains and another one with panic button for me... We have two alarm pads and all 17 windows with a feature that will allow me to keep the window open 8" if I wanted... I feel safe already... LOL...
Anyway - They are installing on the 25th and I was even able to talk them down on the monitoring fee a month... WOOHOO.....
Thanks for all the advice given It really helped... I felt bad I cancelled on Slomins though...
