Question about cruising while pregnant.....
DH and I are currently TTC. In the meantime, I am determined to live my life until I actually AM pregnant. We would LOVE to plan a cruise this summer. So, here are some questions...
1- At how many weeks do they say you are not allowed to cruise? (I think this is set by the cruise line, right?)
2- If I am miraculously too many months pregnant to cruise, can I get a dr's note and get the money back?
3- If I AM pregnant but just by a few weeks/months and still "allowed" to go on the cruise, what is it like cruising pregnant? I went on one cruise a year and a half ago (obviously not pregnant) and I didn't get sick. Is it more likely I would get sea sick while pregnant?
TIA!!! Honestly, I just want something to look forward to this summer in case I DON'T get a BFP I don't want to have the mindset of really wanting to go on a cruise but saying "well.......... I might be pregnant" ..... and then not be pregnant after all!

Thanks! We're still trying to decide what to do.... I'm thinking being pregnant and surrounded by all those buffets might be pretty nice!

Only in your 2nd trimester. As the previous poster stated, you will most likely be sick from many food smells until about 13 weeks.

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
I cruised while preggo with DS, I think I was about 20 weeks. I was totally fine. But then again I'm not one for motion sickness and I never suffered with morning sickness either. I would suggest you either get trip insurance, hold off until you know you'd be under 24 weeks, or book an all-inclusive resort- since you can fly for much longer then cruise.

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
I went on a cruise in November I was 16 weeks pregnant!
I didn't get sick at all, I had to get a dr's note stating my gestational age and I wasn't allowed on the boat without it. As previous posters had stated after 24 weeks its a NO NO.

i don't want to sound like Miss super-crazy-paranoid Pregnancy here , but honestly, some Drs would have buffets on their "bad" list. Too much bacteria. My Dr told me to stay away from them when I was pg.

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
FYI Most cruise insurance will not give you your money back for just being pregnant. You will need to have documented pregnancy complications not to be able to cruise.

Thanks. This is so frustrating, I'd LOVE to plan something, but I'm not sure if it's worth the risk! To be quite honest, I am feeling pessimistic and feel like I won't be pregnant by that time! But, I'm not willing to put all that money on the line just in case!

Ohhhhh you just said this to an OCD Queen! I am such a germaphobe.......
Thank you for the info! Although, what's going through my mind now is...... if the buffet has too much bacteria for a pregnant woman, I'm a little skeeved about going to one even while NOT pregnant!
I typically go to a place with a salad bar and just try not to think about it. I try my hardest to go by the 'ignorance is bliss' philosophy, otherwise I would never leave my house!

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
I cruised in Nov when I was 9/10 weeks pregnant with my first DD. I LOVED it. I DID have MS at that time - but the only real issue I had was food smell aversions. I had trouble smelling some foods and those would make me sick. We tried to eat one night in a specialty restaurant and it didn't go over well. Otherwise it was an amazing babymoon. Keep in mind depending on what activities you want to do you might be limited while pregnant (don't know if you scuba dive, and you can't go on things like jet skis etc) but I did several catamaran and snorkel trips and we had a blast.
I would be careful though if you go Jan/April -that is high time for Norwalk virus (stomach bug) it is around all year but much worse at that time.
Otherwise I would say go and enjoy yourself!

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
my OB did not recommend it, but clearly others have gone and had no problems. i would have been about 20 weeks when we would have went. he didn't recommend it because of the water, close quarters, etc. i had absolutely no complications at all, so maybe he was just being cautious?

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
I went on a cruise at 9 weeks pregnant. We booked it before we knew and my doctor okayed me going because I didn't have any risk factors. In all honestly, his biggest concern was what if I miscarried and needed medical care. We had insurance to cover getting me off the ship if necessary.
I did have bad nausea at night during the last 4 days of the cruise (it was a 7 day cruise). That sucked, but luckily I felt okay during the day, so I was still able to do the excursions. We did change our excursions so we had less active ones. We were in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. It was very hot, so I drank a ton of water to stay hydrated.
Honestly, I had a great time still and it was nice to travel with just DH one last time. Also, it took us 9 months to get pregnant, it doesn't always happen right away. So I wouldn't put your life on hold hoping you will be pregnant by then. Book the trip, just get trip insurance in case!

Re: Question about cruising while pregnant.....
Thank you for all the info ladies!!!
I have a gyno appt tomorrow so I decided I will ask my dr about getting a note if I am pregnant at all, and then I can determine how I feel...... Otherwise if I am NOT pregnant, at least I'll be off cruising somewhere and hopefully bring home a souvenir
