Nikon mommies Help- Please D5000 or D90?
Im upgrading and DH and I are having debates and more due to the pricey $$$$.
I did some research and keep reading they are compatible but then read on other that its a beginner (D5000) camera, like my D40.
There is a major price difference too and I also want a 50mm lens.
TIA for any advice!

I am researching as we speak as well. Consumers Reports rated the D90 the best. After reading 90 million comparisons it seems that the D90 prevails everytime. If you google "Compare Nikon D90 and the Nikon D5000" you can see.

Re: Nikon mommies Help- Please D5000 or D90?
I just ordered the D90 today. I am upgrading from the D50. I personally know nothing about the D5000, but if it is similar to the D40 or D60 then the D90 is a better choice.

Definitely the D90 with a 50mm. I don't know if a 50mm will autofocus on the D5000 since it's the 'new' D40 and that didn't have a motor for focusing certain lenses...

Re: Nikon mommies Help- Please D5000 or D90?
The D90 has built in image stabilization and the D5000 does not. If you plan to upgrade or add to your lens collection with the D5000, you will prob want to get the VR lenses with stabilization built in. This somewhat limits your choices and these lenses can be more expensive. The beginner kits come with two lens that are most likely all you will need for normal use. Beyond the image stabilization, it is basically identical to the D90.

I think the D3000 is the replacement of the D40. The D5000 is the replacement of either D60/D80 (not sure which one!).
I personally would go with the D90.

I've heard (and read) that D 90 better than D5000. I have even heard from some people that they like D 60 more than D 5000, I'm not exactly sure how true it is though.
I just found this : camera

It is being considered the replacement for the D60 but it has many more features. The two most notable being the ability to capture HD video and the flip out screen that can be rotated in to help keep you from accidentally scratching it.

D5000 is the REPLACEMENT for the D60....
A great website for reviews is
Ken Rockwell
50 mm is a great choice and will auto-focus on the D90.
You really just need the 1.8

Definitely D90. I believe the D5000 is a beginner level, comparable to replacing the D60/D40.

D90 - great camera hands down.
I love my 50mm 1.8 lens, I use that lens a good majority of the time. You'll def have fun with it.

Don't feel stupid - Nikon updates their models every 14 months or so. The D40/D60 have been their entry level DSLRs for some time. It was probably time they got an updated version out.
