 | Crate training/Behavioral Question? - VERY long Hello ladies I have a question for you!
JJ is excellent around the house, he's housetrained and never does anything during the day. The last couple of months he has been peeing at night. Not every night, but it was enough to get us worried. We took him to the vet, they did a urine culture and gave us antibiotics.

It didn't stop, so they gave us MORE antibiotics and it still didn't stop. So, although we hadn't done it since we got him, we started crating him again at night. We set up the crate in our room and he has no problem going in and is quiet all night.

But, about 20 minutes before he has to Ray gets up, he starts making a noise and hitting the cage and repeats this every 30 seconds or so until Ray's alarm goes off and he takes him out. When Ray gets up, he gets dressed, goes to bathroom, does what he has to do and then takes JJ out right before he's going to walk him and he is quiet during this time.

My question is, is he making this noise because he has to go out? Is that why he was peeing? I just don't understand because we take him out at 11PM and walk him at 6:30AM. I am just asking cause I'm selfish and I want him to stop making noises. He's not a puppy and it's not that he can't hold it cause he can go for longer than that during the day if he has to. By the way, he also does not pee in the crate so it is not a medical issue.

Any suggestions from the crating experts? Any help would be greatly appreciated

 | Re: Crate training/Behavioral Question? - VERY long he's probably whinning and crying because he has to go to the bathroom, he's just on that schedule.
I would try picking his water up in the evening. If his last walk is at 11, I would pick up the water and food dishes at 7:30-8....thier digestive system is about 2 hours, so this way YOU KNOW that everything has been "expelled".....

was he peeing in the same spot at night? was it spraying-like marking is territory?

Did anything come up from the urine analysis? What were the antibiotics for?

 | Re: Crate training/Behavioral Question? - VERY long It sounds like he is crying because he needs to go out. Maybe you DH can take him out before he get ready for work in the morning? |

 | Re: Crate training/Behavioral Question? - VERY long Boogie started doing this as well...what I suggest is walk dog before your DH gets ready rather than making him wait-hopefully he will get used to this and know that he doesn't have to whine/bark whatever because he will be going out-get him used to that schedule...Good Luck...

 | Re: Crate training/Behavioral Question? - VERY long Okay lots of things....
I tried picking up the water at night before we started crating him - that didn't help. But I suppose I'll try doing it again now that we are anyway

At first he was peeing in the same general area, but then he started going in different spots which is what confuses me. Every time he pees we clean with an enzymatic cleaner and steam cleaned the carpet so I don't think he's attracted to the smell.

Blood came up in his urinalysis. I suppose I should take him back again, but I really have a feeling it's behavioral because like I said he'll only do it at night.

Also, DH doesn't get ready for work first, he walks the dog first. but he just gets up to pee and change out of his PJs before he takes them out is all.

 I'm at a loss.

Azad, I know you think it is behavioral but do you know exactly what his medical issue is? I know UTIs are very painful and cause dogs to urinate.

They only told me that he had blood in the urine, which they said may be a sign of an infection. He only peed twice the week he was on antibiotics. We called the vet and they said to give him 10 days more antibiotic (instead of 7).

I am going to call them today and have them do a culture and sensitivity and maybe an x-ray.

 Here is some UTI info:
 Canine UTI

A good friend's dog got them frequently and I know accidents were a problem.

Poor JJ. I hope feels better. Keep us updated

I don't like that the vet told you there was blood in his urine, but didn't tell you what that was indicative of....

She said it could've been cause of a UTI (but they didn't see any bacteria on the culture and sensitivity) but I also think it could've been cause they had to go up his wee wee to get the sample.

I called today and she said to remove the water at 7 or 8 and then call her again in a week. I don't think I'm going to crate him this week to see what happens. DH said when we did it before we took the water away around 10 so let's see!
