 Why Read A Book?
What makes you choose a book to read? Is it the cover, the author, a recommendation by friend, newspaper or magazine or something else?

 Re: Why Read A Book?
Mostly based on recommendations from friends or family.
I usually read all the books from authors I like.
Sometimes there is just a buzz about a certain book or author so I'll give them a try.

 Re: Why Read A Book?
I read the jacket covers to see if something interests me. I also read the NYT Book Review every Sunday and takes notes from there. Working in the library is a big plus for me, since I see them as soon as the boxes are open!!! Suggestions from friends are also good.

 Re: Why Read A Book?
Based on the description. Basically, if I see that it is depressing, I know I'm going to LOVE it.

 Re: Why Read A Book?
I love autobios, they will always be my favorite, no matter what their life was about.
fiction-really depends on if the book falls into my lap or I hear great buzz around it.
  I also listen to Oprah
ETA: also People mag always reviews books, I order them on Amazon used if they sound good.

 Re: Why Read A Book?
Different reasons - sometimes I go by:
*author *book's reputation (if it's a classic or well respected) *genre (I prefer fiction over non-fiction) *similarity to other books I've read - i.e. I'll check out a book I like on amazon to see what they list as similiar to it *friend's suggestions *subject (I'm going to read Holy Blood and Holy Grail next because I'm interested in conspiracy theories lately)

Well, I read she's come undone and loved it but I really wasn't that happy with the one about the twins (I always forget the name). It was good, but I think was dragged out too much.

 Re: Why Read A Book?
i purposely avoid the oprah book club books...i don't need people thinking i let oprah think for me.
i choose based on title and author and genre. i like mystery a lot...
