Black and white attire requested wedding
We received an invitation that had the following request: "Black and White attire requested. Black tie optional." Does this refer to colors both the woman and the man should wear or to the level of formality of their clothes? Thanks in advance

I would say it refers to the color each guest should be wearing.

Re: Black and white attire requested wedding
It means a man should wear a black tux or black suit and a woman should wear either a black or white formal dress. With it being BT optional it does not have to be floor length. HTH

I wonder how many people may misread the invitation and show up in all white

Is it possible that it is intentional -- would this particular bride wear a color gown? And that is why they don't want people to wear colors, just black and white?

If I read the invitation correctly, as long as the dress is formal, that is acceptable. The bride is looking for all of her guests to be in black and/or white and black tie optional is requesting a certain level of formality.
There was a destination wedding a couple of years ago where the guests were all requested to wear white....the bride and groom wore yellow.....it worked

Re: Black and white attire requested wedding
I actually wore a cream dress (with a small black print) to a wedding once when I knew the bride was wearing a red mandarin dress. She didn't request it, but I felt comfortable wearing that dress and I never would at a traditional wedding.
Maybe her dress is red?

I'm not sure what she is wearing, her invites were black and white, on the STD she is wearing white and he is in black ....maybe they just really like black and white

Re: Black and white attire requested wedding
To me I find it odd that a bride would want other women in white I would probably wear black to play it safe.
Also unless DH owns a tux, I would have him wear a dark suit.

I would say both. Black & white attire requested mean, Yes, actually wear the colors black & white, and black tie optional means formal.
So wear something formal, black and/or white.
