precautionary meds before vacation???

Hi Everyone,

I'm leaving for vacation in two weeks and I'm a little nervous with the recent swine flu scare.

We're staying in London for a week and then flying to northern Italy. We'll also be flying from northern Italy to Southern Italy. We'll be in a very rural area for a few days before flying home...

In all, we're talking about 4 flights. I'm worried about getting ill- particularly while we're in the rural area, but my regular doctor is against proscribing anything for me to have with us "just in case" we end up getting sick.

Do you think I should find another doctor who will give us meds to take along with us incase something does happen? We really will be scr*wed if we get ill while we're in the rural area, so I'm very uneasy about this...

Unless you are in the middle of the woods 100 of miles from any kind of town you shouldn't have a problem finding a doctor or clinic. Where are you going to be staying? A hotel or private home/villa?

We're staying with one of DH's relatives in a very rural town. I'm not worried about northern Italy because we're very familiar with that area and know where the doctors/hospitals are. But, I'm definitely worried about the southern area. We'll be approx 50 miles from Naples.

I really wouldn't worry. If you are sick enough to need a doctor I'm sure you will be able to get to one. The locals need medicine too sometimes! Try not to worry. And as for the oink virus Chat Icon, my friend came back from Playa right as all this was going down and she is 100% healthy. Take your vitimins and try not to stress. Enjoy your trip! I understand your worry, but I don't think 50 miles is that far. I'd skip the precautionary meds.

Enjoy your trip! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wouldn't say you would need any precautionary meds, but I say bring your normal pain killer type meds, and whatever else you are comfortable with bringing on your trip. Like Immodium is always a good thing to bring...

I say this because I have memories of pointing at the japanese word for diarrhea in my English - Japanese diary to a young pharmacist in the Iriya district of Tokyo. It was pretty embarassing.
