4 year old taking bus to school??
Just wondering if i'm the only one who isn't comfortable with their 4 year old taking a bus everyday to pre-k????? I know i'm on the over-protective side, but just wondering if i'm the only one.

DS qualifies for the bus for next year (kindergarten) and I refuse to let him go, even though it would help me out (on time).
I'm to worried about the "what-ifs". Also, I can't guarantee that someone will be home everyday to get him off the bus.
PS - this is door-to-door to private school.
I certainly wouldn't go for it at 4yrs old. Don't blame you for how you feel!!

No, my DS who will be 5 in December, is going to k next year, but I will be driving him, I really dislike the idea of him being so young and taking a school bus. But I am a sahm so for us its not a big issue for me to drive him.

DD goes to a special school right now she will be 3 In June. I just let her take the bus a month ago, when she started begging me. She absolutely loves it!!! The bus drivers are a husband and wife team, they are great and have been driving for 15 years. There are also six other kids on the bus. I am a SAHM as well, and could easily drive her. There are what ifs even if I drive her as well. I pick her up at school for now though, In September I will let her take the bus home! I say try it!!! I am starting to love that bus just as much as DD!!! It's worth a shot!!!

Funny you post this....
DD is in Pre-K this year and I didn't worry about her at all bring on the bus. She is mature and can handle herself quite well.
DS will be going next year and he is another story! I am not a fan of putting him on the bus  I don't think he will do well with it. Granted, a lot can change in the next few months, but I just can't see myself doing it right now.

sorry but.. HELLZ NO!
I nearly lost a friend to a bus accident and she was in HS. I can't imagine with a kid who's 4. Nope, never gonna happen. I live walking distance to her elementary school and short drive to middle school. As long as I can get away with it, I'll be driving her.
When she begs to ride the bus I guess I may relent but I doubt it.
Bus has no seat belts
too many kids, not enough adults.
ugh.. just can't think of it. Oddly enough I know I'll let her do it for sports! go figure.. I'm conflicted.
But at 4? no.

My DS started taking the bus to pre-k and I was a bundle of nerves.
Not going to lie, I still get a bit nervous, but, the bus is the best thing that ever happened.
There is also a matron, so, that definitley helps.
He takes the bus to school everyday and home 2x a week (I pick him up from services 3x a week).
He LOVES it and it makes my life easier.
I am a SAHM, my DD recieves in home services, so, it just helps my schedule tremendously.

I was really nervous about DS taking the bus to kindergarten. He was 4 when he started. Anyway, I usually drive him in the morning but he takes the bus home. He loves it, and the bus driver is awesome. Such a nice man. Don't worry, either way I'm sure it will work out.

I guess i am the odd one out.. DS has been taking a bus to school since he was 3. we are actually turning it down next year when he goes into K
i guess i am comfortable with it, because when i was growing up i took at bus starting at the age of 3 as well to pre-school

My son was 4 when he started Kindergarten and I had no problem at all putting him on the bus.
My dd was just 5 when she started K also and I never hesitated once.
ANYTHING can happen no matter if it is with a bus or you driving your car to school.

We are walkers but if we weren't I would not be comfortable with it. I don't agree with the lack of the use of seat belts to start with and bullying on buses scares the crap out of me.

I never thought I would let my son take the bus, but I did this year when he started kindergarten.
His bus stop is about a half a mile away from the school and does not cross any major roads. It is not very crowded and the oldest children are in second grade.
Honestly though, if it weren't for these conditions, I'd be driving him every day.

My DS was 4 when he started kindergarten, and I put him on the bus. I'm still a little nervous, but he loves it. He does wear a seatbelt on the bus every day, and the bus is only kindergarten through 2nd grade, so that makes it a bit easier.

See this is the part that keeps my DS off the bus at this point. I hate buses, yes. I was a walker my whole life and just dont think they are safe. Yes, something can happen when I am driving but I know he is in a seatbelt, fastened, sitting in a proper seat, etc.
But my bigger reason for keeping my 4yo off the bus in Kindergarten, is that I have heard horror stories about inappropriate things happening and being learned on the bus.
First hand stories about bus drivers having kids sit on their laps, boys being near abusive to girls, etc.
My fears probably wouldnt apply to thos kids taking a bus to Pre K but I still wouldnt rest easy no knowing for sure if my 4yo DC made it to school that day or not.

Again, IME...Kindergartener's are made to put a seat belt on everyday. As they get older it is their choice.
Things DO happen but I can't shelter my children from everything bad thing that COULD happen. I can't smother them with my own fears. If something DID happen then I would take some type of action about it but I can't live my life like this.
