4 optional tests during pregnancy
Hi everyone..
I had my first appointment with my OB today and he went over so much information with us... There's one thing I can't remember exactly. He said there are 4 optional tests during pregnancy to test for downs.
1- blood test between 11-13 weeks 2- ultrasounds 3- ??? I can't remember, I thought he said this test was a combination of tests 1&2 4- amnio
Does anyone know more about these tests? He said we needed to decide by my next visit if we will be getting any or all of these tests.
TIA for your help!

The NT (nuchal translucency) scan is the first test, done around 11-13 weeks, and is a combo blood test and sono. The sono will show the thickness of the skin at the back of the neck - thicker skin is a soft marker for downs.
The AFP is done around 16-18 weeks and it's a blood test.
The amnio is something that most people do not get unless they are older OR the NT/AFP tests come back with a higher chance of a genetic issue.

Re: 4 optional tests during pregnancy
I believe the 3rd optional test is cvs.
1and 2 are non invasive and pretty routine... Its a blood test to tell you the odds of your child having downs...
The amnio is invasive and you should do some research on it... This os usually done only if your blood tests cone back abnormal and your still given a choice if you want to do it.
Cvs is definately invasive and again you should research it. Its a big decision because theres a chance of loss with this test.
Are you over 35? Are you considered a high risk pregnancy? Any family or personal history of issues? On dh side?
These are things to consider and discuss with dh. They are very personal.decisions.

Re: 4 optional tests during pregnancy
Thanks for your help ladies.. I'm 31, not high risk and no family history. We did all of our genetic testing at our RE and everything came back normal. I think I will just go with the non invasive testing unless god forbid something comes back suspicious.
Thanks again!

It's probably the AFP test around 16 weeks that your trying to recall.

Re: 4 optional tests during pregnancy
Theres a blood test called the MaterniT 21 test. According to my dr.'s its almost as accurate in determining Downs and other genetic disorders as the CVS and amnio but elmininates the risk of miscarriage.
I had this test done because Im 36. Knock wood, everything came back fine.

Re: 4 optional tests during pregnancy
We're doing the blood tests and the sono to test for Downs. I'm not ok with doing anything more invasive unless those tests come back with questionable results.
