4 month old bedtime

What time do you put your 4 month old to sleep? And does he or she STTN?

Everything I read on baby bedtimes says that earlier is better but we've been doing 9pm bedtime with wake ups every 2 hours (or less Chat Icon) throughout the night. Just trying to grab on to some success stories and tips...

4 month old bedtime

For both dds we've always down early. Like 630/7pm. For us the later bedtime they would wake up the same time if not earlier. The early their bedtime the later they sleep.

Both girls were sttn early on.

My DD just recently started STTN for the most part and she is 6 months. There are a few nights where she will wake up and some where she will whine but just go back to sleep. She gets tired in the early evening and we let her go down for a short nap and then put her down again around 9ish for the night.

She usually falls asleep for the night between 10:30 and 11. Most of the time she sleeps through the night til about 6:30 but on occasion has woken up sometime between 4:30 and 6 or sometimes after 7.

DS2 is 3 1/2 month old and is STTN about 95% of the time. He puts himself to bed around 8 - 8:30 pm and will wake up around 6:30 am. Honestly, he's more in control of his bedtime than I am. The occasions when he wakes up in the middle of the night, I feed him and then let the RNP rock him to sleep. Hang in there!

Re: 4 month old bedtime

bedtime was pretty early for my LO at that age - like 6-6:30 and sleeping 12 hours. i didn't really feel like i determined that time, seemed like baby did. i certainly would have preferred around 7 but baby just couldn't hack it. bedtime didn't shift to 7-7:30 until around a year old.

i found the book Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child to be helpful in dissecting and understanding baby's sleep needs. I'm sure it was part luck of the draw and maybe a small amount of setting baby up for success on my part, but we had a STTN at 12 weeks old, EBF wonder child. 2 years later i can count on one hand the number of times we've had a wake up after bedtime. very reliably good sleeper.

My LO goes to bed between 7 and 8 and he sleeps through the night until 6am. Any later and he wakes up early (like 4ish) and then he doesn't nap right the next day. He started sleeping through the night around 4 months.

My DS always went to bed at 9ish. Still does at 4 yo. He didn't STTN for a long time so moving a bed time will not make a baby STTN.

Some just aren't ready til later.

Both of my DSs go to bed at around 9, most of the time. Never really had a problem with DS1, but with DS2, he def wakes up several times a night Chat Icon . He's a breastfed baby so I wonder if that's the reason?!? DS1 was formula fed.

At that age I started Sleep Sense. He was going to bed based on the time he would wake up from his last nap but it was always between 7-8 PM. He'd get up once around 2-3AM to nurse and then would be up for the day around 6.

So many people say do this and do that

NONE of it worked
NONE OF IT
NOTHING
NONE
ZERO
ZILCH
NOTHING
NADA

Not even in the slightest

She slept when she wanted to as long as she wanted to. 4m is too early for cry it out and I'd never have done it anyway. Nor did I. She went to bed late, slept until 4-5 AM, we woke up. It was just the way it was. She didn't TRULY STTN until 1yr old.

I didn't care. I mean it's one year. Who cares? She was healthy. We co slept until 6m so we could all get some good solid sleep when we could catch it.

No, we did not go to bed earlier.
Yes, we both worked, I went back when she was 3m
We survived.
She would sleep if she was touching me. On and off here and there. I tried to keep her awake until at least 9pm then let her drop off. She'd sleep until midnight, wake up briefly which was when he was just going to bed anyway, so he'd feed her, I went to bed at 11pm, then I'd wake up at 3am, then we'd both wake up be up at 5am-6am anyway.

Our saying was Sleep is for suckers!

Good Luck!
Promise it does get better.

Oh and btw, altho we co slept, she went to her bed by 8m and by 20m she never ever wanted to sleep in our bed ever again. We used a snuggle nest so she was perfectly safe. Having her in bed with us meant less getting up and out of bed. She also didn't care about hot or cold milk. I stopped BF due to meds. Hubby was man enough to feed her. Keeping her awake for feedings was the hardest part. LOL

Re: 4 month old bedtime

At 4 months DS was going to bed at 9/10pm and STTN about 10 hours.

At 4 months DD was going to bed around 8pm with 1 MOTN feeding. She didn't start STTN until closer to 6 months, and now at 7.5 months she still sometimes wakes up.

Every baby is different so just keep trying to figure out what works best for your baby. But waking up every 2 hours at 4 months old is not normal. Babies need sleep for brain development. What's your night/bedtime routine?

Re: 4 month old bedtime

I just had a post about this the other day!

my dd is 4m and does not sleep through the night. Actually she has the worst sleeping pattern right now since shes been born.

She goes to bed between 9-10. But sometimes wakes up shortly after for more milk. Then is up maybe 2-3 hours later and then another 2 hours later. After that second feeding, lately she will not get comfy and will keep waking up every 20-30 min!! The past few night I ended up putting her in the swing around 4-5 am because I know she will sleep soundly in there! But then that means Im sleeping on the couch!! Then I have my 3yo waking up 1-2x recently asking for ridiculous things. I am literally up all night =(

My friend recommend this book 12 hours by 12 weeks old? She lent it to me and I need to read it because she has her 3m old sleeping through the night! The idea is to get your baby to drink all he or she needs during the day and not at night. bigger bottles spread apart all day. I need to try something because I cant function!

My DD was always a bad napper so she went to bed early. At 4 months she was going to bed around 6pm and I think she would wake up twice throughout the night to eat and wake up for the day around 6am.

I feel ya girl! I do currently feed him bigger bottles during the day. He does not get fed overnight if he wakes up. My pediatrician is a proponent of cutting out the overnight feeding once your baby goes through the night without, which he was doing around 10-12 weeks but for the past few weeks, we've been back sliding with the frequent wake ups and its freaking exhausting. Here's hoping better nights are around the corner!!

My 3 month old goes down at 730 (same bedtime as my older boys) and sleeps until 7am, waking once around 3am to nurse and goes back down.

Re: 4 month old bedtime

last and 4th bottle of the day at 8pm and he falls asleep after that and is usually in the crib at 9pm when older DS goes up as well. he usually sleeps throught the night, but the last couple weeks he has been teething so bad he is not sleeping well and then he managed to get another cold after the wknd and had been a mess this week. So i have been completlely exhausted, and jus tin time for busy season too.

absolutely no bottles over night. he will not eat again until sometime after 7am. but we get that rule from the same pediatrician and i swear by that!
