39 week dr. appointment and a kind of stupid question too!
went for the 39 wk today and am hoping not to deliver til my DD next week when the school year ends! so i am still 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced (was 25% last wk) a little progress... my stupid question is:
exactly what does effaced mean? i know i should look it up or even better asked the dr. but coming from someone here it might be more clear. ALSO i am spotting (sorry TMI) kind of pink thick discharge and wondering is that from the internal could it be bloody show? i don't know i am so paranoid! thanks for any insight!

Effaced means your cervix is thinning out and shortening. Dilating is opening of the cervix.
The spotting is common it's prob from the internal.
You're getting close!

i beleive effaced is how thin your cervix is, in order for the baby to come out you need to be 100% effaced. my doctor said its more imp't then being dilated. also i have bled after every internal, so it could be from that or it could be something more, def keep your eye in it

I have heard it explained as if you were to take a life saver and suck on it - never biting it - it starts to thin out to nothing - that is what effaced is like. HTH

Now where was this when I was trying to explain it to my DH? I am telling you that he pretty much to this day thinks my "stuff" was stretched wide open and if he'd looked, would've seen clear up to the baby.
