GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

can we do some kind of 'support' thread for each other??? meal suggestions, snack ideas, ways to handle this whole thing???

i went for our classes today and felt so overwhelmed, i literally came home and cried for a LOONNNNGGGG time...

I'm SURE once i get the hang of it - it won't be a huge deal, but today was a very rough day....

I pretty much know a TON of things that I cannot eat, but not a whole lot that i CAN... She gave me a limit on carbs, but unlimited protein....so i'm at a loss. I have a full meal plan for tomorrow - but after that - i'm clueless (yes - i'm calling them back tomorrow)...but thought maybe this thread could help me, and others.....
_____________________________________________

Update: 1/15

So - i also have to test for Ketones every day (i am assuming that's normal) and yesterday was fine. Today - MODERATE amount. I called the nurse line and was told that i have to hit my carb number for every meal and that i have ketones because i didn't have carbs with my snack last night...(i had two string cheeses)... So i'll do the same tonight and add in a cup of milk...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: GD Girls....Official Thread Maybe??

I had GD when I was pregnant and I know EXACTLY how you feel!! I cried for the first few days because it seemed SO overwhelming but within those few days I figured it all out and honestly, eating within the right carb limit and testing my sugars became second nature. You will figure out what your body needs, what foods affect your sugars, what food do not. It takes a little getting use to but once you get the hang of it it honestly was not that bad. In fact, I felt so much better and healthier those last 12 weeks of my pregnancy and I even lost weight so it wasn't all bad. What got me through was knowing it was a short term thing and I would be back to my old self in no time. The second I delivered Emerson my GD was gone and I've been fine since. Lots of luck and if you have any questions feel free to FM me anytime. Chat Icon

Jess, I agree with this.

I FM'd you earlier this morning.

What works for some, might not work for others. I know there are women that can have whole wheat bread/whole grain bread, etc... I can't, they send my blood sugars soaring, but I can have Weight Watchers bread and that keeps it in check. Same with dairy. I find that dairy also sends my blood sugars soaring. It's so overwhelming at first and I felt like there was nothing I could eat and found myself consistently hungry and crying all the time. It took a few weeks, but once I found what works for me, I was able to start "experimenting" more and was able to introduce more foods that I thought would be no good for me.

see - part of the thing is that the nutritionist RUSHED me through the whole 'book' that she had to go over with me. In all honesty, she even commented on how the last woman ran late (i got the sense she had a 4:00 appointment).

i GET all the things i cannot eat....truly - i get it....but what about the things that I can. How am i supposed to know how much chicken is enough? If i can have 1 cup of spaghetti, how many meatballs??

For lunch - i get that i can have a 6 inch tuna sub from subway with a diet soda?????(diet soda?????? - i thought that was bad btw)...

but what if i want a salad? How much is the "right" amount?? Does it matter?

Re: GD Girls....Official Thread Maybe??

I know how overwhelming it first feels, but in a few weeks you'll feel that it's no big deal at all. I am so used to it now and I'm glad that I'm keeping my eating in check- I've gained less than 20 pounds and I'm 36 weeks.

Different foods affect people differently so just be sure to test your blood sugar and you'll be able to figure out what works best for you.

Some food suggestions that work well for me:

I'd recommend sticking to grilled chicken, turkey, tons of veggies, whole grains (rice & pasta) for lunches & dinner. A big salad with low fat dressing, a little cheese, and some grilled chicken is a great lunch. I eat a turkey sandwich (cold cuts), with a slice of pepper jack cheese, a tablespoon of 1,000 island dressing, lettuce & tomato on whole wheat bread with a small apple or pear every day for lunch & my numbers are great. I eat two eggs with two slices of whole wheat toast and 4 oz. OJ for breakfast every day (I am sooo sick of eggs!). Snacks that work for me: Dannon Light & Fit Yogurt (no other brand- too many carbs) and a small banana; whole wheat pretzels sticks with hummus or PB; PB on a whole wheat english muffin; tons of light popcorn.

You really can eat food than you think, just keep your portions small and stay away from pizza, marinara (and most other) sauces, lots of carbs, fried foods.

When we order in Chinese I get steamed chicken & brocolli with sauce on the side & I dip it.

From Chipotle (I love that place!!!) I get the bowl (no tortilla) with the rice (no beans), chicken, lettuce, tomato, pico and a little sour cream. I eat half of the bowl & my numbers are fine.

I can eat a small portion of meatloaf with about a 1/3 cup of mashed potatoes and veggies.

I grill up a lot of chicken (outdoor bbq or george foreman grill) and make chicken caesar wraps with just a little bit of light dressing.

ok, time to test my sugars! Hope this helps.

Edited to answer some of your questions:

You need to use your best judgement and see how each meal affects your sugars, then adjust.

Unlimited amount of salad with a small amount of dressing (maybe two tablespoons??)

As for meat portion size- it should say in your booklet thing. I never went to the nutritionist this time (second pregnancy with GD) and don't have one, maybe someone can check for you. I usually stick to HALF a chicken breast (3-4 oz. maybe??).

Half a baked potato/sweet potato (tons of carbs & sugar).

You cannot have unlimited fruit, so be careful, but you should have it three times a day in small amounts.

I would eat no more than three meatballs.

I would NOT drink diet soda or anything that has sweetener in it, personally.

Make sure you eat the three meals & three snacks- the before-bedtime snack is very important for your morning numbers. Best snack ever: veggies & hummus or ww pretzel sticks & PB (I buy the low sugar kind only). Remember, limited quantities.

What did you have for breakfast?

Just remember, it really is trail and error. What the nutrionist told me and gave me a sample of in a meal plan really didn't work for me either.

an english muffin and very small amount of butter.

i'm supposed to call them if i have 2 high numbers in a row - needless to say - i'm now PETRIFIED to do the 2 hours after lunch number... I'm thinking i'll do the tuna sub - but with no bread....

I was told an english muffin was okay too, but I can't have them, they raise my blood sugar levels. Try the weight watchers english muffins and see if that helps. I can't have those either, but I can have the other weight watcher breads. You'll probably be like I am and can't do bread.

figures - we buy the two pack thingy of muffins... Maybe I can do half... i guess i can try that tomorrow...

so for lunch - i'll do the tuna without bread...or just a TINY bit of bread...like ONE bite.

Is it okay to NOT have carbs at all - or are they NEEDED??

Breakfast is notoriously the hardest meal. It is totally trial and error. I would follow the meal plan to a t and still had a lot of high numbers. I had to figure out what worked for me. You just started so be patient! You'll figure it out!!! 8 pts over is not crazy high. Of course, you want it lower but don't freak out. What is your goal 120 or 140? My Nutritionist wanted under 120 after an hour, which are the strictest standards and I did it, but it took a couple weeks!

as for the eng muff, was it whole wheat? If not, I would try that, weight watchers, or 1/2. If you go for 1/2, I would add some protein so you get more filled up and satisfied.

Re: GD Girls....Official Thread Maybe??

carbs are definitely needed, but stick to whole wheat/whole grain. On my diet, I was required to have carbs (15 grams per serving- up to 3 servings for lunch & dinner; 1 serving for snack) as part of my diet.

I don't think that an english muffin with butter is enough for breakfast. Was it whole wheat? They have a double fiber whole wheat kind now. or try WW or 1/2 of one AND add two eggs. You must must must have protein with breakfast to sustain you or you might feel nauseous. A yogurt smoothie is another good breakfast option, just keep the fruit limited.

make sure that you're eating enough.

I am eating the same exact things this time as I did last pregnancy. Last time I had to be on insulin shots, this time I don't. So not only do different people react to foods differently, the SAME person can react differently to foods! It really is trial & error.

Stress can affect your numbers. What you ate last meal/snack can affect your numbers.

Remember, if the diet doesn't work out, there is always insulin. Some OBs are even using pills now as an alternative. This is a controllable disease & it's temporary. Stay on top of your testing & the baby will be fine- that's the most important thing.

ETA:
Put the tuna on two slices of whole wheat bread with lettuce & tomato and a little oil & vinegar perhaps & see what your numbers are. There's no need to completely deprive yourself of real food if your body will tolerate it. Also eat a small apple or pear (1/2 a big one). Test in two hours & see.

I was having issues with my morning numbers. Not drastic,(in the low 100's) but they were consistently over the 95 point mark they were targetiing. My Dr. put me on 1/2 a pill at night before bed and my morning numbers have been perfect.

i guess the reason i'm panicing is because i have to call them if i have two numbers OVER the limit...and i'm already at one. I just KNOW that my afternoon number will be over....

i did a regular english muffin...i will try half tomorrow and maybe consider scrambling an egg (meaning getting up earlier, but whatever)...but i add margarine to the pan before i scramble - is that okay???

fasting: 60 - 95
and the rest of the day between 60 - 120

That's another place my 'issues' come into play....i don't like a LOT of foods.... Someone mentioned oil, vinegar, lettuce, etc. I wouldn't eat that normally...

the nutritionist didn't believe me when i said i don't cook in oil, i swear, we don't have oil in the house...she was like, what do you cook with? I said - i dunno....whatever...i have never cooked anything that required oil... Dave had to speak up and say - we don't have any...we really don't.

I didn't know i could george forman chicken cutlets...would i just do them like on the barbeque?? Marinade them in salad dressing and throw them on there????

Good for you! Walking can really help.

I would not marinate the chicken before grilling, but yes, you just put them on, close it, then open it up in a few minutes & voila!

After much trial and error I realized that the ONLY thing I could eat for breakfast (and this was true even being on insulin shots) was real oatmeal (not instant), a protein shake made with water and a string cheese. ANYTHING other than that and my sugars spiked. I couldn't even have whole grain bread or a muffin even though the carb count was in range. My breakfasts were always hard. Try things out and see how your body responds. Everyone is different but you will figure it all out. Chat Icon

BTW - My endocrinologist said to NEVER skip the carbs. Always eat what they tell you at each meal.

Re: GD Girls....Official Thread Maybe??

for your snack, I'd recommend one string cheese, 8 whole wheat crackers (honey flavored Wheatables are really good) and a small cup of milk. Too much cheese may have an adverse effect.

It does seem overwhelming at first, but in a few weeks, it's no big deal. You just have to be very responsible & diligent about sticking to the exact diet & don't forget to test. No cheating, no skipping meals/snacks. There are sooooo many things that you CAN eat and I have never ever felt hungry on this diet. It has only slightly altered what I eat normally, to be honest. It is probably the healthiest you will ever eat, which means it's great for you & the baby. The diet also helps to keep your weight gain to a minimum. Try to focus on the positives. Good luck!

I only eat whole wheat or whole grain breads (goes for the eng muffin as well)

It gets easier I promise. This is my second time around and I am not struggling this time although the weight loss is going to be an issue.

I find if I have a good protein with every meal it helps my numbers. I try to walk or move around after every meal.

It is total trial and error. I was told cereal is the worst thing for a diabetic yet it does nothing to MY blood sugar.

I found the first time if something didn't make my sugar go up I stuck with over and over again.

PM if you have questions
