Photoshop mommies-a question
I downloaded a free 30 day trial of photoshop. I have been playing around with it and today I got photshop for dummies from the library. All I want to do is make a few pics black and white adn then make certain things color, like eyes, a pumpkin, etc. I can't figure out how to do it in this book!!
I found a tutorial online, but it didn't work. Can anyone walk me thru this? I would really appreicate it, thank you so much in advance!

Re: Photoshop mommies-a question
What you do is make a 2nd layer--a copy of the first picture and make THAT 2nd layer B & W (desaturate the color). Then use the eraser tool on the area you want colorized.

Re: Photoshop mommies-a question
Right click on your photo, select duplicate layer
This will create 2 layers of the same photo.
Select the top layer (which is the first one listed in the layer box on the right hand side).
Desaturate (Ctrl+Shift+ U) that layer. YOu may need to play with the contrast because desaturating makes grayscale rather than true B&W.
While still on the top layer, which is now B&W, click the eraser & erase the part you want in color.
You figuratively have two photos one on top of the other. The top one is B&W, the bottom one is in color. You are making a "hole"in the top layer & the color is coming through that hole.
I hope that makes sense.

Re: Photoshop mommies-a question
You can do this without even making a layer. You use the lasso tool to outline the area you want to be colored( so its protected) and then de-saturate the color completely on the rest of the photograph. I have a hard time with layers for some reason so I just do it this way.

Re: Photoshop mommies-a question
I would do the following:
1. Open your photo and go to Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Black & White. Click OK.
You can play with the sliders to adjust your conversion but even just using the Black & White adjustment layer gives you a much, much nicer conversion. The Desaturate command gives such bland black & whites.
It also creates a mask. So the next step is super easy.
2. With a soft BLACK brush, paint on the areas you want to be in color. The color comes back!
3. Layer->Flatten Image and you're done.

I used to do mine with the desaturate command, but OMG, I did this and it's SOOO much better, the colors pop even the b&w
