3 year old and computer games

I got DS a preschool video game to use on my laptop. He can't get the hang of the mouse so its not going well....

Any tips? Did you start DC w/ the toy laptops? Which one?

DS just turned 3 - likes the video games - doesn't know letters/numbers yet...we're working on them.

And as a long shot - do any of the toy computers come w/ DVD player?

Re: 3 year old and computer games

my 3.5 yr old DD loves all the games on NickJr.com

She used to have to have me there to help her bec she would get frustrated with controlling it...but now once I set her up she does it all by herself!

My DS is 3.5 and I feel like he is too young for video games, whether they're educational or not. I'd rather have him play with his cars and blocks and use his imagination and have him learn him learn to read from his books. I do let him navigate the computer for example when we're looking through videos or pictures.

Re: 3 year old and computer games

Ds is better at the real computer than the play ones.

Just give it time. DS started on the library computer games around 2.5yo. I used to have to be there to help him.

Then a few months before he turned 3 we started on Nick Jr and Sprout websites. By 3yo he could do it all by himself. NO help from me at all, he can turn on the computer, load up the internet browser and go to the sites he likes.

Only think that I think will help is time and practice.

DD has a Mobigo. She calls it her "DS"

She has done great teaching herself to navigate it, she's 3.

She also loves to use our computer, and can navigate it well enough to find youtube Laurie Berkner videos. We have a wireless optical mouse.

Re: 3 year old and computer games

my nephew really liked the games on the disney website when he was 3. He also liked playing games on the nintendo ds and we actually got him a used one at game stop for his 3rd birthday. I think there are fun baby einstein games for the DS too...

This is how we are, too. One of our sitter must have let him play a Thomas game on a library computer one day and now he wants to play it every time we go there. Chat Icon

I feel like their generation is going to be even more tied to computers than mine is and I have this vision of him staring at a computer/TV screen for most of his life --- I don't want him to be at a computer yet, but that's just me.
Although, I also thought I didn't want him to know how to see pics on my cell phone -- that went out the window when I realized how much time it buys me. Chat Icon

Thank you to those who offered your suggestions on the question asked.

And to those who felt like they need to get on Chat Icon I didn't ask for anyone opinions on whether or not to let DS use the computer.

Re: 3 year old and computer games

My DD got a real laptop for Christmas from my in-laws. They got her a special mouse that only has one big button and loaded it with learning games.

I also set up favorite places to online websites like Sesame, Nick Jr, Sprout, Curious George, etc.

It took about 2 weeks for her to get used to the mouse. Now she's a pro!
