We did it! We own our own home!!!!!!!! Updated with link to pics!
I've been very reluctant to discuss our experience thus far because I felt that things were going so smoothly that I didn't want to jinx them, so I will gladly discuss it all now.
First of all, we had an amazing REA. She was so patient with us. We started looking last June and were disgusted with everything we saw. She was patient while we decided to wait a few more months and then she was even more patient when we looked at house, after house after house.
We were very hell-bent on living on the north shore, as that is where we were both raised and that is where our families live, but the more and more we looked, the less and less it seemed that we would find everything we wanted in a house on the north shore.
Friends of ours bought a great house in Patchogue for a great price, and when we went to go visit for the first time, we asked ourselves why we hadn't thought to look there.
Two houses into our search in Patchogue we found our absolute ideal home. Formal diningroom, den, livingroom, three bedrooms, 1.5 baths and old. We wanted an old house with charm that we could add our personal touches to. I never in a million years thought I would own such a charming home with such a charming little porch out front that was only two blocks from the water. But, here we are. We got a great deal on our house because we bought it from a little old lady who loved that we loved her home. It needs a total updating, and we are starting this weekend with both bathrooms, but we're so excited.
Two and a half years ago when I found out I was pregnant, the dream of owning a home was just that...a dream. We thought there was no way we could ever afford a baby AND a house, but we did what we had to do and now, here we are.
So, for those of you in the process of buying your first home, it's a little scary at times, but trust your gut and you'll end up with what you always dreamed of.

How wonderful! Your house sounds ideal- I'd love to have something similar. There is nothing like an old house. If you decide to post pics I'd love to see them!
