spinoff on Pedro Martinez
For the people who think it's "OK" because it's legal in the DR.
I am a bit puzzled by the answers.
Does that make it OK because it's not in the US?
Animal cruelty is the same everywhere. Isn't it?

Re: spinoff on Pedro Martinez
I know firsthand about cockfights in DR and it's really a big thing down there. Moreso a cultural thing. It's an actual sporting event held at an arena.
I would put it in the same category as bullfighting, to be honest.
They are trying to make this as big as the whole Michael Vick thing, but MV was running these himself, doing it all underground, profiting from it and he, himself was torturing these animals. That's a big difference to me.
Do I think it's cruel? Absolutely. I do feel bad for the animal and I was born and raised here so I'm not immune to seeing something like that. But for alot of these countries, these traditions have been around for centuries and they are very important to these cultures.

I truly believe it's animal cruelty...but at the same time, since it's legal there, Americans don't have much say in the matter. As another poster said, it's a cultural thing like bullfighting and although it's not legal in the states we cannot control what other countries do. IF Pedro were involved in cockfighting in the states, I think it's a whole different story.

Re: spinoff on Pedro Martinez
I'm sure that people from other countries look at our meat industry, fur industry or pharmaceutical, cosmetic or medical industry, and think that Americans ritually participate in animal cruelty.
So I think that until we eliminate all possible forms of animal cruelty, we shouldn't be throwing stones.

Personally I don't agree with it but I'm not going to crucify someone who was raised in a completely different culture than I..

Same here... I know about this 1sthand. And bullfighting is the same as cockfighting out in DR. Perosonally, I think that bullfighting is as cruel as cockfighting, but had Pedro been seen at a bullfight, this wouldn't be national news. I think bullfighting is just as cruel, but I don't think that one should be accepted over the other because they're in the same caliber. So being that they're carried out in the countries that they're legal, I don't think that anyone should be crucified for it.
