That made my day today! I was looking for my old post to update everyone and found this- thank you so much. As a fellow counselor(mrswask), you know how hard this is for me.
I guess I really do live in a different society here in CA. Apparently, the do this here every three years and they do have some people get very angry but feel the impact it makes is worth it. They also did have the "dead" students in class all morning and we will have the crashed car on Wed.
They made the announcement in 2 period during silent reading so everyone heard it. It was chilling to hear the activities director make the announcement but many students saw her before school today so they realized right away that it wasn't true and part of red ribbon week. I did not have a flood of students in my office, Thank God. I will be meeting with the student council at the end of lunch to see the feedback from students since they went around after the announcement and handed out wristlets to any student who agreed to be drug and alcohol free this week.
I had a long talk with the activities director(someone I really like and trust) and he heard me out about my fears and concerns about this announcement. He agreed that it is a very harsh thing to do but that he was sick of seeing our red ribbon week become a joke to so many students. He also felt that the backlash was worth it if one student does not drink and drive.
We agreed to disagree- I still feel this was wrong and not appropriate. I am happy that the students seemed to handle it well and that there was no major fallout on there part.
Thanks again for your support- this was a long weekend for me and you all made it so much better

I'm glad it wasn't too bad.
I was thinking about it all weekend and couldn't imagine having my son come home and tell me the school did this to him.
I would have raised some serious hell.

I'm glad it went over all right with the students. I guess if it's done every 3 years they kind of knew it was coming, hopefully it got the message across.

Thanks for the update, Christine I'm glad it didn't go as horrible as thought. I told my fellow counselors at work today and they were beyond horrified. Hope you don't come into a zillion voice mails.
PS - I agree, who cares about the impact, it's still sick and unethical.

Thanks for the update, I'm glad it didn't have as bad as a turn out, 'BUT' i still think it was wrong and unexpectable to do that to the kids, I'm sure some of the parent's will be calling you tomorrow, i hope i'm wrong!

OK, I still think it's wrong but if you're going to try to make something like that have the impact you'd hope for, it might help if the supposedly dead student didn't show her face at school (or wherever people saw her) prior to the announcement.
Glad it went easier for you than expected.
