2 yr old suddenly stuttering
DS is 2 1/2 and has a very expansive vocabulary. Has been speaking in complete sentences for some time now. But all of a sudden he is stuttering. Mostly it is at the beginning of his sentences. He will tepeat the 1 st word like 5 times and seems as though he is struggling to get his words out. Has anyone experienced this with their child? Should I call the dr? Is it a phase?

My friend's DD (same age as your DD) was doing that for a while. She brought it up to the ped. who said, at that age, their brains are moving quicker than their mouths. It went on for a few months and then she stopped.

Re: 2 yr old suddenly stuttering
my DD did that badly when she was 2 and it appeared over night. It completely freaked me out but it only lasted 2 weeks. I read about it online and its actually common at that age to happen suddenly and only last for a short period of time.

Yep VERY VERY common. DD did it for a while. It's that they are learning a bunch of new words, phrases, concepts and their brains work faster than their mouths can get it out.

DS did it for a very short time. I'd just tell him to slow down a bit, and it went away quickly. I agree that he was just thinking faster than he could speak.

Re: 2 yr old suddenly stuttering
The exact same thing happened with DD. I was so worried that it would be a major issue. She did it for a few weeks which felt like a lifetime and then stopped. It did crop up a few times since, but now, at just about 3, it seems like she is totally over it. (Knock on wood)

It probably exactly what staceywill described but I would call your pediatrician just to be sure there is nothing else going on.

Yes this. My 2.5 year old stutters when she's overly excited and trying to talk faster than she can get the words out.

My LO started doing this recently as well. Over the last few weeks it has gotten better, but not gone completely.

2 yr old suddenly stuttering
Same thing just started with my 2 year old. Out of nowhere he started stuttering, mostly at the very beginning of his sentences. I did a quick look online to see if it's common. I really felt like his brain was going quicker than his lips could move. And apparently it's VERY common and only needs to be evaluated once they get to preschool age. I have to say, it's reduced over the last 2 weeks. And his speech has exploded. So I think maybe there's a correlation.
