2 under 2 moms- carseat placement?

I was thinking today of how I'm going to deal with the carseat situation when DC2 is born.

I know the safest place is in the middle- but how do you work it when you have 2 kids? Do you have to choose which one will have the "safe" spot? Put them both on the sides? Buy a 3 row vehicle so they're both in the middle (this is actually an option since my lease is up soon).

Please help me understand this.

I have 3rd row seating but both carseats are in the second row and they are each on one side. I think it would be extremely hard to put them both in the middle. To get the one that's in the 3rd row in and out would be such a pain all the time IMO.

I agree with this. I think the whole "keeping the car seat in the middle" pretty much goes out the window with most cars when you have 2 kids.

My kids are on the passenger and drivers side. I have a Ford Edge (2 rows).

Re: 2 under 2 moms- carseat placement?

I think the car seat guy (sorry cant remember the name) recently posted about this.

First as I recall, the infant car seat is not supposed to touch another seat so in most cases that would rule out having one in the middle and one next to it.

And especially with young kids its not recommended to have them close to each other as you can't be sure what the older one is going to do to the younger one. for instance give the baby a snack they can't yet eat...etc.

So he said they recommend one on each side of the car.

Im pretty sure the reason why you put an infant behind the passenger side is because stats show that is the side of the car that is the LEAST likely to get hit in a crash. A toddler or older child has better head and neck control and would take impact better on the other side of the car should the car get hit on THAT side. I could be wrong, but I believe someone told me that when I was contemplating car seat placement.
