1yr old and sleepiness
I have asked about this before but I need to get more mommy feedback. My ds is 12m. I worry he does not have enough wakeful time during the day. He is looking to take a nap usually 2-2 1/2 hours after he wakes. He takes 3 naps a day still. Each nap is usually around an hour or so. He just had his 1 yr blood work and they tested his thyroid and iron to see if that was the cause for needing so much sleep. Everything came back perfect. The dr mentioned maybe he has sleep apnea and doesnt sleep well at night, causing the daytime tiredness but he sleeps great at night, no snoring, not much tossing and turning.
I am at a loss and my anxiety gets crazy everytime someone comments how often he sleeps. What else could cause this sleepiness. After 2hrs awake he is cranky, crying and rubbing his eyes.
Any insight?

Re: 1yr old and sleepiness
are your doctors concerned with how much he is sleeping? I know this may sound crazy, but do you know if he really is sttn? there are nights i randomly roll over and check the monitor and sure enough DS is awake playing quietly in his crib. sure enough those days he is extra sleepy and takes longer naps. maybe your lo has some awake time during the night that is causing the daytime tiredness?

The dr does seem a lil concerned. And most nights I do believe he sleeps straight through. I check the monitor constantly at night lol.

Have you considered having a sleep study done?

Three naps sounds like a lot but at that age DD took one 3 hour nap a day. I didn't think a 3 hour nap was unusual though so he's just doing the same broken up. She's almost 3 and on the days she naps she will still sleep for 3 hours if I let her and will still go to sleep at her normal bedtime. She sleeps 11-12 hours at night.

Re: 1yr old and sleepiness
This was my son, exactly.
He only just recently went to one very long nap vs. two (he's 19 months) but at that age he was doing the three. All in all, it was about 3 hours of sleep a day plus 12-13 hours at a clip, at night. Now, at 19 months, he is around 2 hours a day and still 12-13 hours at night, without a peep.
It takes everything I have to keep his eyes open beyond 6:30pm.
The kid needs his rest - their brains are going at such a rate and they are developing... my doctor was not the least bit concerned.
I wouldn't worry about it and only because I'm in the same position and my son is totally fine and developing great. And I was the SAME way when I was a baby.

DS is 11 months and sleeps a similar amount.
When home on the weekends, he takes 2-3 naps. Wakes up at 6:30. Naps around 9:30-10 for 45 mins-1 hour. Naps again at 1-1:30 for 45 mins-1 hour. Naps again at 4-4:30 for 30 mins. He then sleeps 7-6:30.
When at daycare, he takes one nap from 11:30-1:30 and then usually a cat nap when he gets home around 4:30 for 30 minutes.

My son is 21 months and naps at 10am for two hours and for one hour at 4pm. He wakes up at 7am and goes to bed at 8:15pm. I think your totally fine and wouldn't worry too much.

I don't think 15 hours of sleep (in total) for a 12M old is abnormal. I think it's typical (if you are lucky to have a good nighttime sleeper) and probably good for him.

Re: 1yr old and sleepiness
Just wanted to say there is a range of normal sleep needed by everyone, even adults. Some can fiction on 4/5 hours, some need 8/9.
It was around this age my daughter consolidated naps she didn't go down to one until switching rooms at daycare at 18 months. She will still nap up to 3 hours a day and 11/12 at night and she is 27 months.
I don't think I would stress this especially since you ruled out the common medical issues.
Over the next few months he should start to combine the afternoon naps to get down to 2 but I'm personally not into forcing my child into routines. We've let her take the lead.
Edited to add if he just started walking he might be burning a lot of energy and mental concentration during his awake hours. At one they are kind of crossing over from baby to toddler and it's a big transition
