1st Haircut

Where should I go for a 1st haircut and is it okay to cut before a year old? I heard some kind of wives tale that it shouldn't be cut before their 1st birthday.

Re: 1st Haircut

I just saw your post now.
I'm going to take Julia to my hair dresser, when she finally grows enough hair so she can cut it--lol I'm not sure of the old wives tale's, but if you feel you wanna get it cut now do it!

Re: 1st Haircut

My dh family believes that, his family is from Puerto Rico. My son's hair was cut at his christening at 6 months ( not a haircut just a snip) it is part of the ceremony. He does not have that much hair yet though but if it was long I would cut it.Chat Icon

Jake is 17 months old and has yet to get his haircut. He still has very little hair. When we do take him, which will be soon, we aregoing to Zippity Doo's in Huntington. THey make a big dela out of it, give you a certificate and his hair. I just think its cute (but I know it is not cheap about 25.00, but its his first haircut).

Re: 1st Haircut

I always thought you shouldn't cut their hair until 1 year old, but our pediatrician said it was fine. I cut Nate's hair with some scissors when he was 7 months and DH took him to his barber at 9 months. My mother almost had a coronary when I told her bc she believes the old wives tale.

I was planning on waiting until john was 1 but his hair was so long that I geled it and pushed it back, he looked like a little guido. I broke down at 10 months and had it cut. He's had 3 cuts since, I take him to kids cuts and he is great, sits in a car and watches tv he hardly notices the barber

Mine were baldies. Joseph had his first haircut at Rockabilly's in East Northport at 2 years old. After that we went to a friend of my sister's who cuts hair at home. Maddie had her first haircut a few months ago (2-3/4 years old).

Re: 1st Haircut

Andrew got his first haircut at 1 year. I would have done it sooner, but we just didn't get around to it. It totally makes them go from looking like a baby to a little toddler Chat Icon

Now that we cut it, he needs a haircut like every 6 weeks. Luckily he is good with it, he lets the barber buzz it which is so much faster and then he knows he gets a lollipop when he is finished. Chat Icon

Re: 1st Haircut

Bella has had the "Donald Trump" combover for the last two-three months...her hair is FINALLY growing on the sides...it was so hard not to trim it because the top is so long, but I just imagined how bad it would look if I did...

I am going to take her to my hairdresser at 1 year...

Re: 1st Haircut

Kevin is way over due for a haircut. I cut it myself (sides and bangs) 2-3 times before a year (first time he was only about 6 months - but his sides were so long). Now it is getting long all over and it is starting to resemble a mullet so he needs one (he is almost 14 months old) but as it gets long it is curling so cute so I can't decide what to do. I am thinking next weekend before Easter. We will take him to the barber where Dh goes to get his hair cut.

I think it's perfectly fine to cut there hair prior to one if they have itChat Icon Lauren will be 2 in a few weeks and still really has a little bit of hairChat Icon Her Aunt is going to cut it on her 2nd birthday to trim it up and even it out. I thought it was nicer to have someone in the family (a hairdresser) do it.

Re: 1st Haircut

Hi. I haven't logged in for a couple of days so I am just reading this. I took my son to Zippity Doo's in Merrick when he was about 11 months. It is pricey for a kids hair cut, around $25, but well worth it. They make a big deal of the first haircut by giving you a certificate and a baggy of some of his hair. It is really cute. Also they get to sit in cars and watch tv which is a great distraction. We have never had a problem with my son moving or getting scared and he is two now. As for the wives tale, my mother told me I could not get my son's hair cut before he was one because it was bad luck... I don't believe in that and got it cut anyway! She loved the way it looked afterwards so she forgave me.
