1st birthday spinoff

i would like honest opinions - am i a terrible mom for not wanting to do a big first birthday party for DD? Chat Icon

she is born in February and we live in an apartment so having people over is tough. i have a very large family - my close family members alone is 29 people and DHs family is 12 people. that's not including any friends we may want to invite.
forgetting that my apartment cant even host that many people, food for that many gets expensive. i looked into places and the cheapest i found would end up being $20pp - so about $1,000 for one day that dd wont remember.
i was thinking of just having cake and balloons for her at our place but feel guilty when i hear friends planning these big get-togethers

Re: 1st birthday spinoff

its up to you. We did big Christenings and medium-size 1st birthdays. Both parties were for a lot of ppl, but on a budget. I live in a condo so I can't have everyone over.

2nd bday are very low key for us

we used our condo clubhouse for my DS #2 1st and my parents house for DS #1's 1st.

Can you scale it back to just grandparents & aunts/uncles? No friends?

I don't think you're a terrible Mom. I'm on the fence about doing something for DD's 1st bday too. We just don't have a ton of extra $$ and given the size of my family, it will be hard to have a party with less than 50 people and my house cannot hold that many (her bday is in December so having folks in my backyard is probably not an option. While I would love to give her a huge celebration, I just don't think we can. I'd rather save some money so I can give her bday and Christmas presents and do something small at my house with just extremely close family. I'm still really on the fence though...

Re: 1st birthday spinoff

You are not a terrible mom at all. We decided to do a small christening and a bigger first birthday party with family and a few close friends. After that, we will be keeping it small. DD birthday is also in February and we live upstairs from my parents and could never fit my family as well as DH family and friends. And to spend the money on a restaurant every year is crazy when we could be putting that money toward our savings. I know family members will have something to say (like they did for the christening) but the way I feel is we need to make our own decisions as a family and not worry about what everyone else thinks. Do what you want to do and don't worry about anyone else.

I had grandparents and our siblings over for pizza and cake. I didn't feel bad. I see no need for big parties. I never had them and neither will DS. It's not something I feel I need to depend money on.

Re: 1st birthday spinoff

I don't think you should feel bad at all. I never had big parties, no one in my family did either.
dh and I both have VERY small families... so even inviting extended family and a few friends, we only had about 30 people for dd's christening - I did it at a restaurant.
for her 1st birthday, I am inviting the same crowd plus a few extra friends. honestly, if I had a big family, I wouldn't invite extended family - but bc I don't, I am hoping that she grows up knowing the extended family and still having family to be around.
i'm making it a little bit "bigger" than just a simple party - but I don't think i'm doing anything over the top. and once she's a little older and has friends to invite and they can play games and such, and it will be more of a "kid" party - it will be geared towards such. whereas now, i'm getting it catered etc and gearing it more towards the adults.

No way! First birthday is for you... Not the kid. Second birthday too.

You do not need to do big parties at all. Whatever works for you. The children def. do not remember it!

We had a big christening and 1st birthday party (about 65) and I honestly wish we had the option to do it small. My immediate family (siblings, nieces &nephews) is literally 25 people. Add in DH's family and a few friends, it gets to be a lot. We are doing DD's second birthday "small" and its 45 people!!

honestly if it was up to me I would have had DS 1st birthday party as pizza and cake at the house with immediate family only. It was DH who pushed for a big birthday party, i had to have it at a restaurant because there was no way i could have had that many people at the house. Do what you comfortable with!
