My SIL got DS one of those personalized big Comfy chairs from pottery barn kids - best gift ever! DS loves it. He will get years of use out of it.

We have a corelle doll for DD that she can't put down.
She IS 2 though. For 1, we never got either kid a present. Honestly, they are too young!

for your own child, or for a gift for someone else? how much are you looking to spend?
some of our gifts for dd for her 1st birthday was a personalized growth chart, and the personalized pottery barn anywhere chair
if you're looking for a "different" gift for someone else, one of my favorite gifts I received for dd for her birthday was a musical instrument set, and a raffi cd.
personalized hooded towel and washcloth set is nice too
books books books!!!
