19 vials of blood taken today
Please tell me they only take this much the first time around.
I had some regular blood work, some genetic blood work (the Ashkenazi profile), 1 hour glucose test, and HIV. I just could not believe all of that required 19 vials. Thankfully I had to drink the glucose stuff otherwise I probably would have passed out b/c I had just come from the gym and was starving.

I had TWENTY SEVEN vials taken in the beginning!! But that was it.
Actually, one more vial at the Quad Screen and at the 1 hour glucose.

Re: 19 vials of blood taken today
I had these done at different times, but yes, Jewish panel is 13 vials of blood alone. I had the regular maternity blood work and that was 3 or 4 vials (I don't remember). The thyroid can be 1 or 2 vials depending upon what tests are ordered. The glucose test (mine is at 26 weeks) but that is another vial or 2 so yes, it is possible to have 19 taken at once, but OMG I am so sorry that they had to give you all of those at once. That is a lot to do at one time.

The Jewish panel is a test to see if you are a carrier for certain genetic diseases. Basically, if both you and your DH are both Jewish, the risk of being a carrier of one of them is greater. You can have the cystic fybrosis, maple syrup and some others done that are more general population genetic diseases. Or you could just have DH get the panel to see if he is a carrier. If you are not Jewish the risks decrease that you would also be a carrier of the Jewish panel test of diseases. You can ask your obgyn his/her thoughts on the necessity of these tests. Also ask DH or MIL if anyone in his side of the family knows if they are a carrier for anything. That can help you determine the necessity (or not) of taking part or all of this test.

Re: 19 vials of blood taken today
I did not count because I couldn't bear to count, but there were over 20 at my appointment last week. By the end, I was running out of blood - it was rough. That was just standard prenatal, which includes HIV I think + thyroid + tay-sachs at my doctor's office. (I'm not Jewish and neither is DH so I'm not sure why they did the last one but I actually don't think they did the entire Jewish panel... maybe tay-sachs is based on nationality too - not sure.)
