I am so mad I can hardly speak

This is long & detailed, so sorry in advance, but I have to get it out

Short version: Outside contractors came into my apartment today without my permission or knowledge to do repair work. I was home at the time and did not know they were there.

Long version:

We've had contractors working on our building fixing leaks since the beginning of the month. All day long, 6 days a week, we hear nothing but hammers and hammer drills boring into the building, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Two weeks ago, we were told we had to be available from 9-11 to let them in to work in our back room (an enclosed porch). The contractor came in, explained in very broken English that they had to put support beams up on the porch because the would be doing "a little bit of demolition." (How you can demolish something "a little bit" is beyond me.) I asked how long they'd be working out there, he said two weeks. I told him to ring the bell in the morning, or have the bldg. management call, and I would let them in through the fire escape door. After he left, through the fire escape door, I THOUGHT I closed it completely and locked it behind him. Apparently, I was wrong.

To my knowledge, they haven't been out there for two weeks. Now, I'm not sure. DH, who works until 8 a.m. on Sat. mornings, came out to the living room today around 4 p.m. and told me they were on our porch working today. You can tell by the gaping hole in our back wall, and the fact that there's no ceiling in some places. I asked him how they got in. He said he thought I let them in. No - they just walked into my apartment through the back door!!!! I'm so used to all the noise, I couldn't even tell it was coming from inside my house! Now, obviously, I'm going to say something to building managemtn on Mon., but I don't know where to start! At the very least, it has to be unlawful entry.

This is probably too long for anyone to read, but if I just get any feedback, I'd appreciate it.

I would, definitely, contact building management and tell them that the workers that THEY hired entered your apartment without your permission. No one, not even the landlord, has the right to do this. I would tell them that the next time they do this, the police will be called. Have them give you specific times and dates as to when they need access to your premises. Just make sure from now on that you double check that you locked all doors. If you find that they again entered, call the police. It's obvious at that point that, either they have a key, or management is letting them in. Either way, you, definitely, have a case for illegal entry.
