17P Injections?

Has anyone taken (or currently taking) 17P injections to prevent preterm labor? I've been told that I would be a good candidate (since DD was a "spontaneous" preterm delivery) so will probably start weekly injections in the next few weeks.

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it.

Is that the same as progesterone?

I took progesterone injections until 10 weeks.

A friend of mine that had her 6 weeks early, had to take progesterone shots weekly until week 36. It worked so well - every Sunday she'd take the shot and every week, the night before the shot, she'd start contracting. It would go away when she took the shot so it was definitely working. She took her last one at 36 weeks (a Sunday) and the following Saturday contractions started as always and the baby was born on that Sunday. The OB said 37 weeks was full term and okay so that's why they stopped shots at 36 weeks.

I am currently on 17P injections. This is my second pregnancy on it. My first daughter was born at 32 weeks, same thing, spontaneous preterm labor. So with my son, I was on 17P from 18 weeks to 36 weeks. I had him at 38 weeks. Now I am 35 weeks pregnant with another girl and have been getting the injections weekly since 17 weeks. I will be getting my last injection next week.

It's not so bad. The only downfall of the injection is that you get a very itchy welt at the injection site that lasts 3-6 days. Otherwise, so far 2 pregnancies on it and I feel that its doing its job!

I actually asked my OB for the injections because I'd read it could be helpful. They agreed, and said it wouldn't hurt. I had a short cervix during my pregnancy that was called unmeasurable by the sono tech at the end. Since I was pregnant with twins, my insurance didn't cover it for some reason. I paid OOP for it, but it wasn't that much money at all. I would definitely do it again.

I had the option of having DH give me the shot or having the nurse at my OB's office do it. Since my pregnancy was high risk I was going every week for appointments, so I just had the nurse do it.

Make sure they alternate which side the shot is given each week ... and rub the spot where they give you the shot, it will help with the soreness. Ice packs help too. I never really got a welt. I just found it was hard to sleep on the side where I got the shot for a day or two. No other reactions for me.
