17 weeks and red blood-Update

I'm 17 weeks today and when I went to the bathroom, there was a spot of red blood on my liner...when I wiped, there was more...not a tremendous amount, but enough to make me very worried. I dont have any real cramping, just my normal stretching, etc. I spoke to the on-call doctor in my practice, and we agreed going to the ER is not the best choice right now. It seems to have slowed to almost nothing, but now I am so worried. I had an ectopic in August and have been nervous this whole pregnancy...I was finally starting to feel like this was going to work out positively...

I've been there. My third pregnancy was also a miscarriage. I had a bleeding episode at 10 weeks with my next pregnancy. Everything was totally fine and my son is 27 months now. Hang in there...I know it totally sucks. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

I haven't had any bleeding since then...a tiny bit of brown blood sometimes when I wipe...I'm totally paranoid though...I really want to go to the ER and at least hear the heartbeat, but there is no way we could get there if we wanted to. I wish I was feeling movement at this point, but I'm still not really feeling anything I can be sure is movement.

With my DD I had bleeding at like 10 weeks, it was right after we Chat Icon my OB said sometimes that happens and it's the cervix that's bleeding, just a thought as to why you could be bleeding.

I haven't had sex in 3 or 4 days...I'm hoping it's a freak thing, but after a loss in the past, my mind immediately goes to the worst.

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

I'm sorry your dealing with this. With my son I had a lot of bleeding. A few times it was from straining after I went to the bathroom. The fact that it stopped is very good. Try not to worry. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

Thanks...I sit here worrying about it constantly...I did strain to use the bathroom a bit last night...I just wish Monday wasn't so far away so I could see the doctor and have a sono and know that everything is ok...I would go to the ER, but we haven't had a plow in my neighborhood yet and the roads are technically closed here anyway...the doctor on call felt that if it didn't get to be where I was bleeding heavily and didn't have cramping, it was ok to wait until Monday, because honestly, there isn't a lot they can do at this point anyway.

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

I spotted red with my 1st around 20(ish) weeks. I had no pain, no symptoms, same as you. It turned out to be an infection (I forget if it was UTI or Yeast) which are very common during pregnancy. A safe antibiotic cleared it right up. Good luck. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

If you are worried call your OB, they will most likely send you to labor and delivery to be monitored. I'm sure everything is fine, but the tests will put your mind at ease. I wouldn't go to the er, too many germs!

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

I just spoke to the on call doctor again (he called me to check on me and he's not even from my practice!) and he thinks that since I am only having very light, sporadic brown spotting now and still no cramping, I can wait until Monday to be seen at my own doctor's office. I can't get to Stony Brook at this point, and I really don't want to sit in the ER with a bunch of people with the flu! I don't think they will put me in Labor and Delivery at 17 weeks anyway.

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

the fact you don't have terrible cramping is very positive. Sometimes bleeding just happens and there is no rhyme or reason. With my first son I had that at 14 weeks..but it was a lot of blood..like a heavy period.. I was freaking out...we went to the ER, baby was fine. It was just a small pocket of blood in the uterus near the baby..didn't harm anything and i never saw blood again.

it's true that going to the ER prob isn't going to help anything. They won't send you to labor & delivery until after 20 weeks. It's frustrating but I get why they do that. What I would do, for your own peace of mind is to get a doppler and listen for the heartbeat. it'll reassure you!! I'm sure all is great. It's freaky to see blood though!! I know the feeling all too well.

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

The same thing happened to me around 17-18 weeks and it turned out to be nothing. I was constipated and since my placenta is low it was creating a lot of pressure and the doc believes that is was caused bleeding. Everything was fine though.

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

Thanks for all of your good thoughts and positive stories! I have only had a tiny bit of brown spotting today. I'm going to see my doctor Monday morning unless something changes drastically. I'm 99% sure I felt the baby move a little while ago and I'm definitely getting a fetal Doppler because I need that reassurance. And if you use Stony Brook Ob/Gyn, Dr. Porte seems awesome! I was nervous using a doctor that shares coverage with another practice, but he has been great! Even called to check up on me today!

Re: 17 weeks and red blood

I wanted to update everyone...I went to the doctor today and she did a sono and we saw my little one moving around like crazy, a perfect heartbeat and nothing to indicate bleeding. She did an exam and saw no blood...she thinks it was something that just happened with no reasoning they can pinpoint. So totally a freak thing with no explanation.
