16 week appt
They told me they'd be checking the baby's heartbeat and doing the bloodtest for AFP.
What can I expect? If they are checking the heartbeat, will I get to see the baby? Is it a sono?

No its not a sono.
They will do the bloodtest, check babys hb with doppler and pretty much thats it.
The next sono will be at 20wks.

Yup, same happened for me. Except I got a note to go to the lab for bloodwork (had to do it within a few days, not that day necessarily), because my office doesn't do bloodwork.

They didn't do a sono at mine, just heartbeat and AFP.

This might be a stupid question, but how do they check the heartbeat? Is it something they move over my stomach (like the external sono?)

Not a stupid question! It's actually a little handheld device the doctor has (I don't think it even plugs in or anything), and he puts a little wand on your stomach to hear the heartbeat. It usually doesn't last too long, once he finds the heartbeat and does the counting I guess, it's done. Very quick & informal!
