16 Months and No Words
Our last doctors visit was 2 months ago. They were not concerned. My 16 month old is also the 3rd child if that means anything....
Does anyone else have a baby this age with NO words?
He understands a lot... Show me this/that, how old are you (holds up 1 finger), can point to the person named, etc

Does he make any sounds while trying to communicate? I'll admit i would be concerned to, but it does sound like his receptive language is pretty good.

My dd did not have any words at 17 months (but strong receptively). She didn't even have a word for me. I began the ei process with the county so that she was evaluated the day after she turned 18 mos. (the scoring criteria on the tests change at 18 mos. so it is better to wait til then). She qualified for services. She began in September, and was just terminated! She can't stop talking now and has skills well above her age. The therapy helped a lot.

My daughter was evaluated through EI at 18 months and qualified. She was barely saying anything. She had an explosion of works at 26 months and now has improved greatly. Her vocabulary is amazing and her rec
Entice language has always been great. She still gets speech by the way and I truly feels it helps her.

Thanks! Good to hear she is doing well! Good to know about 18 months, I would prefer to wait!
Yes, it has to do with scoring and the pool of kids they are normal against. You want her compared to 18-20 month range , and not a 15-17 month range. I'd call the county about a week or two before she turns 18 mos., as the process takes a week or two before the eval actually happens, and you don't want to delay.

My LO is just over 15 months and only has 1 real word- Mommy. She does sometimes repeat the word "shoe" and says ' mam mam" to signal food. I am going to bring it up at her 15 mo visit on fri.

My 3rd ds at 21 months had no language but was very receptive and shook his head for yes and no - the dr said the threshold is high with EI so wait until almost 2 and then have him checked if no improvement. I wouldn't worry just yet and definitely wait until 18 months at a minimum or won't qualify if receptive

16 Months and No Words
Very very few at her 15 month visit and doc was not concerned. She is very aware and understands a lot. She will be 17 months on the 14 and in the last few days I have noticed more words or her attempt at more words. She will say something once then not again for days.

I would not be overly concerned, especially since he is a boy and the third child. From what I've heard it's common for them to have less of a vocabulary, and 16 months is still young.
DS was only saying a few simple words (mama, dada, baba, bye and a few others) by his 18 month checkup and by 20 months he had a vocab explosion and we couldn't get him to stop talking.

My DS had only 5-6 words by the 18 month appt. I was told not to worry about it. At the 21 month appt he was only saying an additional 10 words... again told not to worry. I put him in a speech class anyway-- not sure if it is helping. He still only has about 35 words... and not putting two words together. I asked the speech therapist at his program if i should have him evaluated by EI for more services and she said to wait until 2 -- she said he will likely still be rejected bc his receptive skills are advanced.
UGH -- always something to worry about with kids. Sorry you are also going through this. I cant wait for the day that my DS says Love You to me, etc. I will never take it for granted!

The fact that he understands a lot is good. A lot of kids don't have a word explosion until 18/19 mo. Is if possible your older kids talk for him? I've heard of kids not talking bc they don't need to when siblings communicate for them

See i agree with this. My ds never had a "word explosion" hes now 3 and a half and in speech therapy 2xs a week. Better sooner than later to start, if needed

I think it's great that he seems to understand, I agree with other posters, I would wait till 18 months for an evaluation through EI so he is compared to a different age bracket

I think I posted the exact same thing when my ds was 16 months old. He was only saying "da" which I think meant "that"... now he is turning 2 next week & he still is very speech delayed. He says Mama, Dada, Gaga (grandma), Baba (other grandma), Papa (grandpa), num num (food), vroom vroom (car), boggle (bagel), tis (lettuce)... that's pretty much it off the top of my head, so he's not even saying real words. He gets speech therapy and other than that I work with him & practice but he just isn't doing it yet. His receptive language is excellent & he understands pretty much everything we say, he knows a lot, has a great memory & learns quickly, so I'm not extremely worried. I know several people who are totally normal adults now, who didn't speak until 3+ years old, but when they did, they spoke very well. Somebody recently told me even Einstein didn't talk til he was 4, lol, so I think everybody's brain is just wired differently. For my ds, speech is a major weakness. I'm hoping within the next 6 months or so, he'll be able to communicate using language & we're just trying to be patient & help him out the best we can.

Yes he did qualify for speech through EI because at the time he had significant motor delays as well... at 16 months old he was not even able to stand in place without falling. He's caught up though & his motor skills are good now.
