Need some suggestions-
Little info, my DS has been slower then lets say "average" milestone.
Ex-Sat up @6 months, Crawled @ 9months, wouldn't eat a puff w/out gagging or throwing up until 8 months, just started taking few steps this week @ 14mnths....
with that being said-
He is a very good eater of PUREEES( all fruits, veggies & meats) Oatmeal, nutri-grain bars, veggie sticks, cheerios, ritz crackers (recently w/ Hummus & jelly) & puffs!
THATS IT. He will only randomly eat a few pieces of waffle, chicken nugget, or fish stick.Chat Icon Chat Icon
I try w/ every meal. Seems he prefers crunch things over soft things. Something like banana he will try to eat but has a hard time picking it up so end up not trying again.
I want to get off puree but I cannot have him only eats what he eats now.
Help!

Sounds like a bit of a sensory thing. My DS1 has sensory issues, but more extreme than your DS. He's been to some feeding therapists and they use the term "white" foods. Bland foods that are either crunchy or smooth. His diet was pretty much baby food 1 and 2 (they say 3 isn't good anyway with the hidden foods it can gag them)... also yogurts, circle crackers (Ritz crackers he only ate), goldfish and some pretzels.

Keep introducing, but slowly. Try mixing what he's comfortable with and add. Maybe a cracker with cheese on top. Put the food on his plate with his comfort food. At least he's getting nutrition with the baby food. Do the pureed veggies with a turkey meatball. Actually, when DS was finally starting to try new things a meatball was good bc it's bland, but another texture to introduce.
Sounds like he's doing fine. Boys are sometimes lazier or slower with things. Meaning some milestones, but he sounds on target for everything. Sitting at 6 months and crawling at 9 months is perfectly normal. I know many that were later than that including DS1 and DS2. DS2 has no texture issues and very strong.
FM me if you have any questions, but he's on the right path and wouldn't worry too much about the foods. He will get there. Chat Icon

14months-Table Food

It took a good amount of time for DS to make the transition off of baby food.

What worked best for me was cold turkey. I just quit the purees. I knew he could eat table food since he ate some. he ate very little for a few days but in no way was starving....but within a few days he was eating like a champ. I found that he would always eat the purees if offered and give up the table food so I had to take the table food out of the picture.

For softer things, how about having him use a fork. When I first gave DD bananas she couldn't pick them up so I would put a piece on a fork for her and she would put it in her mouth herself. You could try that with anything that stays on the fork or spoon easily like pancakes, meat, yogurt, steamed veggies, pasta, pudding. I also vary how I present things like giving a whole chicken nugget vs cut up or giving her strips of waffle or grilled cheese vs little bites. Some days she does better with one over the other.

my dd is 14m and her tastes vary from week to week! one week she likes eggs or chicken nuggets and the next week she wont eat them! its crazy. shes pretty picky. always eats pancakes for breakfast, eats fresh fruit all day long..cant get enough. loves cheese. but even with snacks some weeks she wont eat what she normally would...
