12 Month Feeding Help

DS turned the big O-N-E on Monday and I am proud of myself to have made it to the one year mark EBFing him. I also make his own babyfood and only use jarred if I needed convenience.

We took him for his 12 month check up on his birthday and the ped said to get him off babyfood and start whole milk in a sippy cup. I could still nurse if I wish. She said to aim for 12-16oz. of whole milk a day and no more than 32 oz.

DS only has his two bottom teeth currently but you can tell the uppers are not far behind.

So please tell me what your 12 month feeding schedule is/was. DS is still getting used to table food. Does well with bread, crackers, pasta in small pieces and I gave his daycare permission to try whatever they are serving. He also likes whole milk yogurt. We are taking baby steps until his gets more teeth.

Day 1 yesterday at daycare he refused the whole milk in the sippy cup (but did ok the night before). Did anyone put their whole milk in a bottle to make sure their DC got enough ounces of whole milk? I've also mixed it in with his cereal so that's a few ounces right there.

Re: 12 Month Feeding Help

By 12 months DD was totally on table foods. I think I stopped giving her purees around 10 months? She seemed to like feeding herself better! She actually didn't get her first tooth till a week after her 1 year bday. I think you'll be surprised about how strong their gums are. My doctor actually told me that you really only use your front teeth to rip things off, but chew with your back teeth and it will be awhile before she gets those! So not to wait on table food because of teeth.

I EBF till a year and switched to whole milk. She could take or leave milk, but eats a ton of cheese and yogurt, she probably has 6-8 oz of milk total all day. I was stressing over it, but I hate milk, so it is what it is.

As far as feeding schedule DD gets breakfast lunch and dinner and snacks throughout the day. She's only 19lbs at 14.5 months so my Dr sort of pushes me on giving her healthy snacks whenever she wants it.

Everyday is different, but breakfast is usually fruit, yogurt, some type of bread or oatmeal with a milk sippy. She'll also eat eggs, waffles, pancakes, french toast sticks, etc. Lunch is sometimes dinner leftovers or hummus, soft bread or crackers, veggies, chicken sausage, cheese, etc. Dinner is whatever I cook, pasta, eggplant parm, meatballs, sweet potato, chicken burgers, roast chicken, etc.

Snacks are fruit, veggie straws, occasional graham crackers, basically whatever we have in the house.

ETA: DD never took a bottle after 6 months. She would totally refuse any BM that was in there. I didn't even bother trying to put milk in there, but if he takes a bottle readily, you may want to try. You'll have to eventually wean the bottle too, so who knows if it's worth it.

Re: 12 Month Feeding Help

Peter knows how to drink from a regular cup or sippy or from a straw so I'm not worried about him learning to drink from other things than the bottle. However, he won't drink milk in a sippy...so I give that to him in a bottle and he drinks it just fine.

I like the fruit purees just to mix into the homemade cornmeal porridge I've been making him for breakfast. The only other thing is those drinkable fruit snack packs with the straw in them.

He eats EVERYTHING. last night he tried Quinoa with beans and corn and chicken. he gets eggs or yogurt usually for lunch. The other day he had some of my tuna melt. he loved it!

as for the bottle thing though...his development is already there...he knows how to drink from all types of cups...so for him its more of a preference thing. As long as I know I'm not hurting his developmental growth, I will continue to put his milk in a bottle until he accepts it in a sippy or until I feel confident he will drink it from a regular cup without spilling it all over himself
