Did she offer you a discount since you referred your cousin? I don't know if I would cancel over it although it would put a bad taste in my mouth. Also, I really wanted to have birthday photos done but couldn't justify the money, we just bought a house and just don't have extra. I did them myself and it cost me $100 in total (props, cake, balloons etc). and I don't regret it.

I understand people need to make money but in this economy im surprised the photographer wouldnt honor the special especially since you referred others. I wouldn't be happy either

ETA: As far as getting a discount for the recommendations, the photographer would probably go bankrupt if she had to give discounts to everyone for a recommendation.

I'm curious if it says anywhere that the discount is for new bookings only. If not, I would not be very happy.
If you do want to cancel, you could always go to Target, JCP, Sears, etc for pictures. You can get great deals with coupons and while it's not totally the same, you will at least have pictures. I generally do my Christmas pictures this way becuase I just can't justify the cost that many of the independent photographers charge.

ITA I would be disappointed but would only cancel if you are tight on money, I'm sure you can go to a JCP and still get nice pics. I was actually thinking of doing DS's smash cake myself too! Would love to hear how you put the background together.

I would be annoyed that you referred so many people and are not getting at least a little discount. I'd expect, "It was for new clients only, but since you're such a great client, I'll honor it for you." In reality though, I don't think you'll get that considering you already agreed to the photo shoot at the higher price. I justified newborn shoots, but I don't think I'd justify 1yr because of the insane price. I'd do them at JCP or take them myself!

Lots of businesses offer specials to new customers -- a photographer is running a business and paying their bills and feeding their families with what they make. They are no different than anything else.
That being said, a lot of photographers I know take plenty of care of return clients and either do a referral program or will toss in extras as they see fit if you're a repeat customer.
If you reached out to a photographer to do photos for your kid -- 'doing them yourself' or taking them to JC Penney isn't comparable.
If you're upset -- just be honest with them and politely communicate your issue with the photographer. The worst than can happen is they can say no.

I've used a few different photographers and they always have intensives to refer. Maybe not a discount but a free picture, free image on disk etc.

You can a few of my pics in my album. I went really easy and just did a white backdrop and black flooring. I did go looking at fabric but I decided to just use what I have  ..I used pinterest for all my ideas, and bought props off of etsy.

I would be upset, though I don't know if you have a right to be.
My SIL recently started a photo. biz--she's great, and did my NB pics and will be doing DS's 1 year pics soon. FM me if you want the info--she's as reasonably priced as you will get.

I realize i am late to the game but wanted to comment to what I think this was about. Photographers put their referral policy out there - word of mouth is the best tool for any business. If you had booked and you gave referrals after then the photographer can credit you for purchases made after. I personally don't know anyone that would "return" money credited due to a referral if that was the problem.
Many give discounts of a next session, free sessions, prints, extra images, etc. I also think giving the client a card stating you have x amount of credit and the rules of it is so essential otherwise people will get confused.
As far as prices mentioned running a photography business is incredibly expensive and time consuming. The higher skill set you have or years in business truly starts to shed light onto things and its the reason you see those prices rise. Like any business once you add the insane expenses, time spent per client you start to realizing charging a few hundred for all disk included will get you in debt and out of business. Unless you're a hobbyist or newbie that has no insurance and pays no taxes.
