Va Beach, IMO, not a great place for a family. Its sort of seedy(just my opinion) I have heard San Antonio is gorgeous. However if you are concerned with being near NY Va Beach is teh way to go. You can drive back in about 5-6 hrs.

I don't know anything about San Antonio, but I am not a fan of VA Beach. It's a very transient town - lots of tourists in season and somewhat deserted out of season. It's not the nicest area in VA either...
IN FAIRNESS, I've never lived there - just visited.

My aunt and uncle and cousin and her husband all live in San Antonio - My aunt and uncle have lived there in two different areas for about 35 years or so and they love it. I'm not sure that they love the school system though as both my cousins and all my aunt and uncle's friends children went to private school. I love going and visiting them though.

I was born outside Houston, spent 13yrs in San Antonio after moving around with my Dad (Navy) then 10yrs in NY/Long Island, now I'm home again with my 1yr old (nearly 2).
I love it. Crazy is lately we've even had better weather than NY. haha. Miss the snow? Travel 4hours north and get it back. Want the beach, 3hrs and you can still find some clean ones left. Want Hill Country .. well that's actually inside San Antonio as well as just 30mins north of it.
Want Colleges.. well heck.. i can't TELL you how many we have in side the city limits but its insane!
School. Well most (not all, I know) schools in the country use our Text books as a basis for their curriculum. For all that we get flack about our education, I must say I see no real difference one way or the other from Long Island. It depends on the school, the teacher, student ratio and how much the parent invests into the kids. Oh and we have tons of Magnet schools. Just about every single person in my office sends their HS kids to another school for some specialty or another. Thats new since I left.

VA Beach: This is the local Spring Break area so you will have lots of young kids by the beach in Spring Break.
You might want to look at Norfolk since it's next to it. It's a "mixed" area. So nice area and some not so nice.
But I do love the area (the nice areas). It's far enough but close enough to DC (I think about 3 hours). It's about 5-6 hours from LI.
