Re: nervous about vacationing in France...
From what I have read, police might be checking bags at subway stations, and tourist attractions like the Eiffel Tower have been shut down a few times. The rioters seem to be keeping their protest focused on the police though, meaning I don't think they are totally out of control.
I'd expect to be inconvenienced, but safe if you avoid areas where the protests are.
In a way, it will be a very exciting time to go, if you want to talk to French people about their views on employment .

Re: nervous about vacationing in France...
We planned our HM this past November to go to London and Paris. The weekend before our wedding riots starting breaking out, outside of Paris. By Wednesday of our wedding week, I was so nervous that we we changed our plans less than 4 days before our wedding.
I just didn't want to go to Paris and be nervous about it on my honeymoon. So the plan has been to go to Paris on our 1st anniversary this year, but with all that's going on, it scares me. (I'm a nervous traveler to begin with!)

Re: nervous about vacationing in France...
My sister will be there this weekend.
She's spending the next 9 days visiting her friend, who is studying abroad in Florence. They'll be in Paris Fri, Sat and Sun. You bet they'll be using public transportation - they're poor students!
We're keeping the international news from my Mother. She's generally a nervous person, and she'd FLIP OUT.
Honestly, I don't think she has anything to worry about, other than the normal Parisian vs. American hostility.
