I think people that buy them off of Ebay for a ridiculous amount of money are dumb!!  Stop buying $200 items for 4 or 5 times thier worth...wait a few months and you can get them for less than retail!!

Supply and Demand. It's what our country is based on. Every time there is a middle-man, someone is making money to just pass an item along. If the price is too high, people won't pay it. People pay what they are willing to pay.
I'm not willing to pay $500 for a Wii, or wait in line for hours, so I'm waiting until they are easier to get. For some, $500 is a price they are willing to pay for the convenience of getting what they want, when they want it.

ITA with this! i don't have a problem with people selling stuff for a profit on ebay - they are taking advantage of the people who are desperate enough to want to pay more!
i am definitely of the "wait till it's back in stores" class - i am willing to bet i'll get a wii for less than $200 if i wait a couple of months. i don't need it THAT badly. even my parents were smart enough to get DH a best buy gift card to use towards buying a wii instead of desperately searching for one themselves.

As a re-seller myself, I don't see anything wrong with it. In fact, I kick myself all the time that I didn't buy some when I saw them in Aug in Costco.

I didn't search thoroughly, but from what I saw just now, it looks like a lot of small time sellers who were smart enough to pick up a few to several Wiis to make a profit.

exactly, there isn't a mass amount, plus stores had limits on how many you could buy.

I do not think that the number of people who bought Wii to sell on e-bay really puts a dent into the demand for them. As for the cabbage patch kids, there were definitely people who bought them to re-sell them. I'm old enough to remember.

I agree with you and all of your other posts on this topic.
What is happening with the Wii is certainly not unique to the American economy. Almost everything we buy has inflated prices because of all the middlemen involved.
We should be happy that there are other Joe Shmoes out there like us making profits on this instead of some huge re-seller.

I agree with you and all of your other posts on this topic.

I do think that in some cases eBay does serve a good purpose though ...
For example, there were certain items I wanted for my wedding that were much easier to find on eBay (and much less expensive) than if I tried to find the same thing locally
Like the sports themed garters I wore

I blame the suckers who pay that much for these things, not the sellers.
last Christmas it was Sony PS3, and ppl were buying them on eBay for thousands of $'s. a few months later, they were collecting dust on the store shelves. the same will happen with the Wii

that's how i feel too. just something i wouldn't personally do - nor would i buy something for more than it's worth on ebay - i'd much rather wait until the craze passes and i can pay fair retail value

I don't think Nintendo deliberately slowed production to create a greater demand. It's not like they increased the retail cost of their product because there were fewer of them. I just think they didn't anticipate such a high demand. They were having issues as far back as April with not being able to supply enough Wiis, so the holidays have only made it worse.

I see it as simple supply and demand
and as a re-seller on ebay- who recently sold a pair of uggs for $100 more then I paid - I think it's great
I normally sell items for LESS then the retail- but it was for once to get more then the retail value
I spent the time looking for them- that counts for something
on a site like ebay- the market sets the price
