Re: Woodpecker problems?
I asked DH. He loves nature. He said the woodpeckers are looking for insects (such as termites) inside the wood to eat. The woodpeckers may have found either old insects or current insects inside the wood. The woodpeckers see a hole and open it up to see if there are insects. They would keep going if they find insects.
DH is curious to know what you find.

Re: Woodpecker problems?
a friend had this problem with her cedar siding - her DH stapled tin foil to her house (not very attractive!) but the woodpeckers peck at the foil and they dont like it, so they leave the house alone.
They ended up getting vinyl siding

Re: Woodpecker problems?
Ok- this sounds so stupid, but here goes...
Find a plastic/ fake owl and put it on the deck. Someone told me this when we had woodpeckers pecking at our cedar shakes. We bought this hideous looking plastic owl at Ace hardware but the woodpeckers haven't come back this season, so we haven't needed to use it. Apparently, they are scared off by the owl.

This sounds almost exactly like my house! When we get the house redone, we are getting siding.... I have thin strips of metal behind the cedar shingles that have holes in them. Not as bad as fully exposed foil, but you can still see sections of exposed metal...
