how long is too long

for a cold to last...

Rj has had a runny nose for like 3 weeks...

Everything is clear... and he has no fever..
not to mention each time I have brought him to the Dr I was told he was fine and "tis the season for cough and cold" but still...

I have his crib elevated, he's sleeping with a cold mist humidifier- but yet nothing seems to be going away..

I mean its not getting worse.. but its not going away either...

On days he is really congested I give him "little colds" cough and cold... (I love the Pediacare decongestant BUT cant find it anywhere...only the cough one is on the shelves)

His eye goes on and off for being red... never any guk or irratation... and the Dr says its not pink eye- but yet the cold traveling into his eye...

Basically- Im just getting a little fustrated- I just want him to be 100% well...

How long does it last?
The entire cold is usually over all by itself in about 7 days, with perhaps a few lingering symptoms (cough) for another week. If it lasts longer, consider another problem, such as a sinus infection or allergies

IMO, I wouldn't worry too much about it since it's not getting worse & he doesn't have a fever. If it were me, I would give him some herbal remedy to boost his immune system.

Um, considerering it's the winter....I'd say how long ever fall, winter and spring last. It stinks, but that's they way it is with kids, it seems. As long as it's clear, he doesn't have a fever, and he isn't showing other signs of being not himself, there isn't too much you can do!

Marissa -- Emily seemed to be congested and have a cold for WEEKS...

I was on and off giving her triaminic...as per the doc's instructions.

One day I just stopped giving it to her...to see what would happen....and she got pretty much ALL better. She has a few boogies here and there but not much...

I know that sometimes meds can give you side effects -- I think it is sudafed types of stuff that can cause rebound congestion according to the PA at my office....

maybe see if he'll just get better? since he's not running a fever or acting out of sorts...just letting his body run its course...

Re: how long is too long

could it be allergies??? damp leaves are a classic allergy trigger!

Try walmart for the Pediacare....saw some there today, 2 kinds.

also, you could check cvs.com or any of the drugstores online

Good question. DS (8 months)has been fighting congestion and a cough for two months. He was on an antibiaotic - didn't work (viral), he was on two forms of medicine - one a steriod - still congested. He's not as bad and the doctor is not concerned. I was told that on top of the prescription to give him Benadryl as needed, saline drops and to use a humidifier (warm or cold). I think he's better but not over it. I think sometimes it starts as one thing and then morphs into something else. Tis the season.

He actually has an appointment with an allergist at the end of the month. Maybe get him looked at - it can't hurt.

Re: how long is too long

It could just be allergies. Which means it could linger for awhile depending on what he is allergic to.

I think it is allergies. My nephew has had that for weeks almost months and the Dr. told her it was allergies because everything was clear and he wasnt complaining. I notice when my allergies act up DS's seems to be conjested aswell.

My doctor said a runny nose can take up to 4 weeks to go away.
