Crib Question

How can you tell whats quality and made well at places liek Babies R us?

I happen to be buying a gift , so was looking at the cribs yesterday.

More then Half the floor models are falling apart, screws loose, wiggly etc? HOW the heck can you judge based on that.

I dont know if its the crib itself or the way they put it together?????

Re: Crib Question

DH and I noticed the same thing at BRU- but my guess is, there are so many people coming in, yanking on it, shaking it, etc. to make sure it's sturdy, that it's inevitable. We did those things ourselves.

It also might not be all that well put together- it seems like they prioritize making a nice display more than anything.

I would consider the reviews on the BRU site, and many of the same companies sell their cribs on Amazon, so that is a good source as well. I initially picked a crib from BRU, and I found the reviews on BRU and Amazon to be mainly positive. I ended up buying from JCP because I saw one I like better.

Re: Crib Question

I purchased my entire set at BRU...and DH assembled it. It is unbelieveably sturdy and I was really surprised at the great quality it is.

this is totally true. they sit there all year...if you see the "new models" in say jan/feb, they'll look much better. by november, they've been pulled at, climbed on and shaken for a year. my daughter's was from BRU and was even the floor model. It was actually in great shape and high quality. You can kind of tell by the original price tag and general design the "level" of quality put into it...but as long as it serves its purpose, there's really not much else you need to know.Chat Icon

I used the baby bargains book. I ended up buying at Buy Buy Baby because they had a drop down crib I liked, plus I was able to save $500 with the 20% coupons.

Re: Crib Question

Baby Bargains was my savior...I did not want to spend $$$ on my set, but wanted to get something nice. I went to BRU in westbury and was totally turned off because it was the same as you described and that scared me.

I left there very upset (PG hormones I guess)...we wound up finding a GREAT set at BBB (with coupons) and the crib was originally $399, so I was happy. My experience there was MUCH more pleasant. I am very satisfied with my purchase because I know I CAN use it for my next child...

Re: Crib Question

I Did read Baby bargains which is why I was questioning it..b.c it says to pull on the cribs, shake it etc, If I did that they would fall apart Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So I will probably use their reviews of manufacturers....but the crib is one thing safty wise I find myself concerned about....

All the places one can get hurt is insane....

Never thought I would be a worry wart Chat Icon

Re: Crib Question

This is the crib we got, actually two of them. There was no way I was buying a $500 crib considering I need two of them and won't be having more kids. We are using old matching dressers from IKEA and a bookshelf.

It's the only one that Baby Bargains gave a B+ to (or higher) that was also the cheapest price, under $500, but got great reviews.

It is only available on-line, $249. before tax and shipping, $357.36 total.

It came yesterday (I ordered it 6 days ago... beats Behr's 13 weeks), DH put it together today. It's beautiful, solid and very sturdy considering the price.

It's the Ellis 4 in 1 Sleep System by Simplicity in the Natural color. I wanted Honey but they are not making it anymore.
